UNITED STATES PATENT Fricn.
l-IERMAN HAUG, OF NEWARK, NEXV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T 0 CHARLES H. MCINTIRE, OF SAME PLACE.
Wl RE-CONN ECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,713, dated October 20, 1896;
Application filed June 10, 1896. $Bria1No. 594,969- No model-3 To all 1072,0712, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN HAUG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire- Connectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention, which is an improvement on the connector covered by United States Letters Patent No. 557,690, is to provide a connector for wires of various sizes, and having a greatly-increased bean ing-surface with said wires even before being twisted, and to facilitate the operation of twisting.
The invention consists in the improved wire-connector formed with two depressions arranged opposite each other and extending longitudinally through the entire length of the tube, and thus dividing the latter into two adjoining and connecting channels of different diameter, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of in y improved connector; Fig. 2, an enlarged transverse section through the same, the wires being inserted; and Fig. 3, a side elevation of a completed joint.
In said drawings, a represents a metallic strip bent into a substantially egg-shaped tube, the edges of which strip are bent inwardly and soldered or welded together, and thus forms a depression e, extending longitudinally through the entire length of the tube. A similarly-shaped depression (I is arranged on the opposite side of said tube and divides the latter, in connection with the depression e, into two adjoining and connecting channels I) and 0, adapted to receive the wires f and g, respectively. The diameter of each channel corresponds to the diameter of its re spective wire. The shape of the depressions is such as to conform to the shape of the wires, as clearly shown in the drawings. The bearing-surface between the connector and the inserted wires is thus greatly increased, even before being twisted,without interfering with the bearing-surface between the said wires within the connector.
The United States Letters Patent No. 347,625 illustrates and describes a connector provided with two depressions, thus dividing the said connector into two adjoining but separated channels, whereby the bearing-surface between the wires within the connectors is interfered with.
United States Letters Patent No. 561,5l38 provided a joint for wires of different size on account of its peculiar construction, yet the bent-over portions of the strip forming said connector separate the wires within the latter, and should said bent-over portions be made shorter moisture could easily get into the joint and thus destroy its conductivity.
The joint covered by United States Letters Patent No. 557,690 does not interfere with the bearing-surface between the wires, but does not provide sufficient bearing-surface between the wires and the joint.
\Vith my present connector all said objections are overcome, and besides it is constructed so as to be applicable for varioussized wires; but it will be manifest that it could be arranged and used for wires of uniform size.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wire-connector consisting of a metal strip bent into the shape of two adjoining and connecting channels of diilerent size and circular in cross-section, said channels being adapted to receive the wires to be jointed and to be twisted together with said inserted wires, substantially as and for the purposes described.
A connector for electric wires, consisting of a tube provided at opposite sides with 1011gitudinaily-extending depressions, dividhave hereunto set my hand this 2d day of ing said tube into two adjoining and connect- June, 1896. ing' circular-shaped channels of different size T A 7 and adapted to receive the Wires to be con- HERMAL HAUG' 5 nected, and to be twisted together with the \Vitnesses:
said Wires, substantially as described. ALFRED GARTNER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I FELICITY GARTNER.
