APPARATUS FOR RAISING SUNKEN VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,442, dated October 13, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. WOLF, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Dover, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Raising Sunken Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for raising and floating sunken vessels; and it consists in the combination, with the pontoon or float, of an interior chamber arranged within the pontoon to be occupied by an operator for manipulating the valves, and also of a sectional pipe connected with said chamber and extending upward through the dome to the atmosphere above the surface of the water. The object of this is to facilitate and render them more manageable in the work of righting up a Vessel that has one end sunken lower than the other and enable the vessel to be floated right side up to the surface.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sunken vessel and a pontoon by the side of the lower portion. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of a pontoon, showing the interior chamber and a pipe leading upward therefrom to the surface of the water.
A represents a sunken vessel the bows of which rest upon a rock, the stern being on a lower level.
B represents a pontoon which has been lowered down by the side of said vessel and may be lashed or fastened to the vessel by any suitable means. These pontoons consist of rectangular air-tight vessels provided with tions of pipe F F may be added as the pontoon is sunk to reach above the surface of the water.
G G are ropes attached to the pontoon by which they are guided when sinking. H is a hose attached to the top of the dome, and which is connected with an air-forcing pump (not shown) on an attendant tug-boat. In the chamber are provided levers L L, fulcrumed to the floor, to which connecting-rods I I are attached, which connect with valves J J in the bottom and side corners of the pontoon, by means of which the man can operate the valves separately or collectively, as may be required.
Having described my invention, I claim The pontoon 13, having dome D on its middle top part, and the chamber 0, located in its interior middle part, the stand-pipe E on the top of said chamber 0, and extending upward out through the dome, and the hose H connected with the top of the dome, all constructed and combined as and for the purpose set forth.
