TYPE-WRITING-MACHINE PLATEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of ALetters'Patent No. 569,092, dated October 6, (1896i.
Original application filed October 27, 1893, Serial No. 489,285. Divided and this application led July 10,1895. Serial No. 555,584. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. DAUGHERTY, of Kittanning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TypelVriter Platens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in type-writer platens, and is a divisional application of my application iiled October 27, 1893, Serial No. 489,285, for improvements in typewriters.
In the type-writers now in use the noise occasioned by the striking of the bars upon the carriage-platen is objectionable; and the object of my present invention is to provide an inatable cylinder or platen for use in typewriters so constructed that the printing-surface is supported upon an inflated cushion away from the metallic portion of the machine, and thereby materially reduces the noise occasioned by the stroke of the type-bars against the platen as they are now constructed.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the inflatable platen embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same shown in its relative position to the type-bars, which are shown in the act of striking the cylinder.
The printing-surface t, which receives the impact or blow of the type, is supported away from the metallic end S of the paper-cylinder by means, preferably, of air-pressure. This is accomplished by an inner air-tight elastic tube w, which is provided with a tube x, extending through one of the end pieces s of the cylinder, and is provided with a check-valve ly.
By forcing air through the tube a: into the inner tube w the latter is expanded and the printing-surface t supported slightly away from the end pieces s of the cylinder, the latter being smaller in external diameter than the internal diameter of the printing-surface t, as clearly shown.
For the purpose of assuring the movement 5o of the printing-surface t with the ends of the cylinder as it rotates I extend pins u from the ends of said cylinder loosely through the printing-surface t, though this may be unnecessary. So, also, the tube w, which is airtight, is provided with a central tube o, through which the shaft 2l of the paper-cylinder passes.
I do not desire to limit myself to any particular construction of my platen, the same consisting, broadly, in providing an iniiatable platen for type-writers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy l. A platen for type-writin g machines having a sheath to receive the impact or blow of the type and an inflatable cushion connected with said sheath to support the same and adapted to deaden the sound of the blow of the type.
2. A platen for type-writing machines having a sheath to receive the impact or blow of the type, and an inflatable tube passing through the said sheath, engaging and supporting the sheath and adapted to deaden the sound of the blow of the type.
3. A platen for type-writers machines comprising end pieces, a printing-surface surrounding the same, pins connecting the printing-surface and the end pieces, and an elastic air-tube between the end pieces adapted to support the printing-surface.
4. A platen for type-writing machines comprising the end pieces, a shaft extending through the same, a cylindricalprinting-surface surrounding the end pieces, an elastic air-cylinder within the printing-surface, the said air-cylinder having a central tube through which the shaft passes.
