Description

UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE. I
CARL MllHLINGI-IAUS, OF LENNEP, AND ROBERT TI-IOMALLA, OF HUOKESWAGEN, GERMANY.
KNIT FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 568,694, dated September 29, 1896.
Application filed April 10, 1895. Serial No. 545,259. (No specimens.) Patented in Sweden October 18,1894,No. 1,083,- in England January 26, 1895, No. 1,874, and in Belgium January 26, 1895,11'0. 87,002.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CARL MiiHLINGHAUs, of the firm of Carl Miihlinghaus, Pet. J oh. Sohn, residing at Lennep, and ROBERT THO- MALLA, residing at Hiickeswagen, near Lennep, Rhenish Prussia, Germany, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Knit Fabrics, (for which we have received Letters Patent in England, No. 1,874, dated January 26, 1895; in Belgium, filed January 26,- 1895, No. 87,002, and in Sweden, filed October 18, 1894, No. 1,083,) and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thedrawing shows a fragment of our improved fabric.
Our invention relates to knit fabrics for underclothing which are to be worn on the body and which have the quality of keeping the body dry, that is to say, which take up the vapor and humidity ensuing from perspiration and conducting it away from the body and enabling it to evaporate outwardly; This valuable quality of the new fabric is obtained by the combination and use of two sorts of yarn in making the same, namely, yarn of raw or unprepared cotton, containing its natural oily or greasy matter, and prepared or finished cotton deprived of oil or grease, or in place of such yarn woolen yarn or wool and cotton mixed, combined with the raw-cotton yarn in the following manner:
The raw cotton serves for making the face or side of the stuff which is worn direct on the body, and it is knit in large open meshes or loops a, whereas the principal or outer side of the stud is made of finished cotton, or of wool, or of wool and cotton mixed, and in close or small meshes b. In other words, our 7 method consists in producing the double stuff A, the inner side or face in open or large looped work a, of raw cotton, the outer face in fine or close looped or meshed work b, of prepared cotton yarn, or of woolen yarn, or of wool and cotton mixed. The inner face so produced is quite unhygroscopical, that is to say, it does not absorb humidity at all, and is therefore always dry. Being knit in large meshes or loops, it allows free exit of the humidity or vapors caused by perspiration to the outer face, which is made of prepared cotton, or of wool, or of wool and cotton mixed, and which readily absorbs the humidity, and thus the body is always kept dry.
The fine meshes or loops of the outer face present a large surface and divide the humidity, and it therefore assists the evaporation outwardly.
The .Wearer of a garment made of a fabric produced according to our method will always feel dry and is free of chilliness and shivering. The courses of loops of the two kinds of yarn or and b may alternate, as shown.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture the described fabric for underclothing made partly of yarn of raw cotton, which still contains its natural oil and is unhygroscopical, this yarn being knit in long meshes and appearing at the under side, principally of the fabric, and partly of yarn of prepared or finished cotton deprived of its natural oil, which is hygroscopical, the threads of this yarn interlooping with the raw-cotton threads in short or fine meshes, and appearing at outer side principally, the courses of the two yarns alternating, substantially as shown.
