HOT-AIRAND STEAM BATH APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,622, dated September 29, 1896.

lin, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Hot-Air and Steam Bath Apparatus,- of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a bath apparatus which is so constructed as to be capable of use either as a hot-air bath or a steam-bath, or a combined hot-air and steam bath. These objects I attain by means of the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and it has also been my aim to provide an apparatus of the above-indicated class which will be simple in construction and manipulation, and with which the temperature of the air and the generation of steam can be readily regulated.
The accompanying drawings represent one form of construction of my improved bath apparatus.

The oven is constructed of iron or other suitable material, and consists of a shell made in two sectionsa and b. The upper edge of each of the said sections is provided all around with apertures or notches a and b, respectively. In a like manner the lower edge of the cover 0 is provided with apertures or notches c, said openings being so arranged that they will register with those of either section a or b when the cover is placed thereon.
The sections of the oven are constructed to v be superimposed, the section 19 being provided at its lower end with an enlargement 12 which fits over the upper edge of the lower section a and which, according to its position, will either allow the entrance or exit of air through the registering openings in the sections at and b or prevent the egress of air when said openings are out of registry. In
a like manner the apertures in the cover 0 and in the upper edge of the upper section Z) can be brought into registry by turning the cover relatively to the upper section. In order that the said openings may be readily brought into and out of registry, the two sectlons'a and b, the enlargements b and the cover 0 are provided with projections a b b and 0 which form stops to limit the turning movement of the sections and cover to hold them in such aposition that the openings will either register accurately or that the openings of one part will engage the solid portions between the openings of the other part. 7
The cover consists of a ring a and a disk d, fitting into it, the latter being provided with a central recess having a crossbar extending over it, this construction being well known.
Then it is desired to produce steam, a heating vessel 9 is substituted for the disk d.' (See Figs. 3and 4.) This heater is semispherical and closed with the exception of an outletpipe 6 8 indicates a plug to close an opening through which the water is poured into the heater.
The pipe 6 carries a horizontal perforated pipe 8 (see Figs. 1 and 2,) so that steam generated in the heater ewill escape through the said perforations. At the lower end of the section a are provided lugs a serving to secure the said section to the bottom of the casing A. The said casing is provided with an aperture A, with which the section a is concentric. The aperture A is intended to allow the heated gases from a burnerB to pass upward into the oven, and, if desired, a funnel-shaped deflector may be inserted in the opening A in order to contract and direct the flame.
When it is desired to use the apparatus for a hot-air bath, the cover 0, with the disk cl, is placed either directly on the section a, or, preferably, as shown in Fig. 3, on the upper section b, in such a manner that the apertures in the upper edge of the section b and in the cover 0 register with one another.
By turning the cover 0, which may be done by means of a wrench applied at 0 the apertures may be enlarged or reduced, and in this manner the temperature within the casing A may be regulated.
It will be understood that when using the apparatus as a steam-bath the upper section 1) is removed and the water-heater e is placed into the aperture of the cover 0, resting on the upper edge of the lower section a. In this case the openings for the passage of heated air are closed. \Vhen it is desired to supply at the same time heated air and steam, the cover 0, being arranged in the manner indicated in Fig. 2, is turned so as to bring the apertures in the cover 0 and in the upper edge of the section a into partial or complete registry, so as to allow the heated air to pass out from the even into the casing A. (See Fig. 5.)
By constructing the shell of the oven in two sections I may employ the lower section at either alone, so as to bring the heaters when it is used as near as possible to the burner 13, or both sections a and b will be used sin1ult-aneously, thereby affording a large heated area when the apparatus is employed as a hot air bath. (See Fig. 4.)
It will be observed from the foregoing de scription that my improved apparatus may be readily changed for use either as a hot-air bath or a steam-bath or a combined steam and hot-air bath. In each case the temperature within the casing A may be readily regulated. This temperature may be ascertained by means of a thermometer f, secured to the top of the casin g, so as to protrude therefrom and to be visible to the person using the apparatus. I will also remark that the shape of the casing is somewhat different from that ordinarily employed.
Instead of making the said casing rectangular or square I have provided it with a taporing or rounded front portion, (see Fig. 1,) whereby the volume of air confined in the easin g is reduced to a minimum, and the amount of heat necessary to bring said air to the desired temperature is diminished correspondingly.
The seat G and the foot-rest l) are con structed so as to be capable of adjustment according as to whether only one section or both sections of the shell of the oven are used. I prefer to provide under the seat a shield of sheet-iron in order to protect the seat from the direct action of the steam and the heated air.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- An apparatus for use as a steam-batl1,l1otair bath, or combined hot-air and steam bath, comprising an oven constructed of a plurality of superposed detachable sections, provided at their adjacent ends with apertures adapted to register with one another, said sections being capable of being turned one relatively to the other to bring the said apertures into or out of registry, an aperturcd cover adapted to receive a water-heater, and a casing inclosing the oven, substantially as described.
