Description

Patented Sept. .29, 1896.
( No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED R. PARISH, OF READING, NEW YORK.
PLOW-BEAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 568,457, dated September 29, 1896.
Application filed November 1, 1895. Serial No. 567,660. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED R. PARISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, with post-office address at Watkins, in said county and State, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow-Beams with Joint and Lever Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plow-beams, and especially to a beam made up of two sections having rack-and-pinion adjustment at their adjacent ends, the two sections being held to metal plates bolted to the sides of the beamsections.
A further aim of my invention resides in the provision of a sectional plow-beam, one portion of which is pivoted to a plate and adapted to be tilted by a rack-and-pinion conneotion, whereby the draft may be regulated.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction of parts, as herein de scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanyin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the portion of the plow-beam to which is attached the plowshare and the handles, (not shown,)
and to the sides of this beam are bolted the plates B, having pivoted in apertures therein the shaft 0, to which is keyed the pinion-wheel O, and D is a handle fitted on the square end of the said shaft 0.
Pivoted on a bolt 6, between the ends of the plates 13, is the beam portion E, which has secured to its end adjacent to the pinion a curved rack-bar G, having arms which are bolted to the section E at F. p
K is a bolt carried by the section E near its longitudinal center and works in the slot J in the plate B and serves as a guide to allow the portion E to tilt'only a limited distance. The teeth of the said pinion are designed to mesh with the teeth of the curved rack-bar, and by tilting the handle D the beam E may be tilted, as may be desired. A rack M is provided, and a pawl may be pivoted to the handle and adapted to rest in the teeth of the rack-bar to hold the beam in a fixed position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sectional plow-beam, the combination with the beam A rigidly bolted between the plates B, of the beam E pivotally held between the said plates and having a guide-bolt K working in slots J in the said plates, of the clevis rack-bar G bolted to the end of the said beam E, of the pinion-wheel O journaled to the plates B and between the ends of the beams E and A, with suitable handle D and segment M, all substantially as shown and described.
FRED R. PARISH. [L. s.] In presence of GEo. A. RINGER, DANIEL S. TUTTLE.
