IM ITATION S'IVIYRNA RUG, CARPET, 81,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,113, dated September 22, 1896.
Application filed April 3,1896. Serial No. 586,133. (No specimens.) Patented in Germany March 25, 1894,No.'78,014 in Belgium July 3,1894,No.1l0,496;i11 Hungary July 25,1894,No.498; inAustria July 31, 1894,1l0. 44/8,649, and in Norway February 28,1896,N0.4,809.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GQTTEEIED HORNIG, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Gnadenfrei, in the Province of Silesia,
Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Imitation Smyrna Rugs, Carpets, or the Like, (for which I have obtained German Letters Patent No. 78,014, dated March 25, 1894; Belgium Letters Patent No. 110,496, dated July 3, 1894; I-Iungarian Letters Patent No. 498, dated July 25, 1894; Austrian Letters Patent No. 44/ 3,649, dated July 31, 1894, and Norwegian Letters Patent No. 4,809, dated February 28, 1896,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to the manufacture of imitation Smyrna rugs, carpets, or similar pile fabrics.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, cheap, and durable imitation Smyrna rug, carpet, or the like, and, second, to provide an imitation Smyrna rug'or the like consisting of a coarsely-woven ground having distinctive warp and weft threads and open meshes, tufts, or loopsof pile projecting therefrom and a sewing-thread coiled or twisted around the warp or weft threads and through the loop of the pile to secure the pile to the ground without knotting of the same.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of an imitation Smyrna rug or the like, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof,
in which- Referring to the drawings, the ground of the fabric is loosely or coarsely woven and consists of the distinctive warp-threads a and weft-threads Z). Upon this ground and pro jecting therefrom are introduced the loops dof the pile d. The pile is united to the ground or backing by means of a sewingthread a, which is coiled or twisted around either the warp-threads a or weft-threads b and passed through the loop cl of the pile d. The pile is thus united to a previously-formed ground without the knotting or stitching of the same. The pile may be united to the ground by the sewing-thread either manually or mechanically, and the rug or similar article thus formed will be found superior to fabrics hitherto made in that no knots are formed in the fabric or in the pile, resulting in a saving of the material of which the pile is formed, which, being generally wool, is comparatively expensive.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, an imitation Smyrna rug or similar article, consisting of a coarsely-woven ground fabric having distinctive warp and weft threads and open meshes, tufts or loops of pile projecting therefrom and a sewing-thread coiled or twisted around the warp or weft threads of the ground and inserted through the loop of the pile to secure the same to the ground without knotting, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GOTTFRIED HORNIG.
Witnesses:
