Description

IINITED STATES F. MURGATROYD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT vIN CONDENSING STEAM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,784., dated July 31, 1866.
w'o all whom 'it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, F. MURGATROYD, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in aSteam-Oondenser, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of the hull of a boat. Fig. 2 is a section through the hull. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. 4 is a vertical section in the direction of the line a: in Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in the diierent views.
In the views, A represents a section of the hull of a boat, in which the steam-condensing apparatus is arranged, in connection with the engine and boiler- B is an induction-pipe secured along the outside of the hull below the water -leveL From this pipe, through the side, is a pipe, C, that enters a condensing-chamber, D.
E is a pipe that communicates with the chamber D through a valve, c. (Seen in Figli.) In the upper part of this pipe, Where it is turned upward, as at E', there is arranged a valve, a. rIhe valves a and c are connected by means of a lii1k,'cl, attached at the ends to cranks h and b of the valve-rods, as represented. This connection is such that as the valve c is opened it will open the valve a, and vice versa, the valves opening and closing together.
The exhaust-pipe from the engine is attached to the pipe-E at c, and to the upper end of the pipe E E is connected the outboardexhaust.
F is a bilge-water'pipe, communicating at the upper end with the pipe E, as shown inV Fig. 4., in which there is a faucet, g.
J is a curved pipe passing through the side,
entering one end of the pipe B, and is con-l nected inside to the steam-engine, for a purposethat will be described.
In the end B of the side pipe there is a funnel-shaped pipe, as indicated by the dotted lines B" in Fig. 1.
The manner in which this apparatus operates in condensing steam is as follows: When the boat is going in the direction indicated by the arrow, the current of water passing through the pipe B from the end B by means of the funnel-shaped pipe, the water will run through in less volume at irst, but with more force,
and in thus running through, by the velocity of the boat, it will exhaust the air from the chamber D through the pipe C, forming a vacuum in the chamber, when the steam from the exhaust in the pipe E will open the valve e, as indicated in Fig. 4, which, by means of its connection with the valve a, will open it likewise, closing the outboard-exhaust. The steam will then be admitted freely into the chamber D, where it will come in contact with the water and be rapidly condensed.
The same effect is produced if, in place of the boat being in motion and going in the direction indicated, it is stationary in a current of water running in the opposite direction; or, if the boat is still and the Water likewise, the desired motion can be given to the Water in the side pipe by allowing a jet of steam from the boiler to pass through the curved pipe J, and enter the end of the pipe B, that will force Athe water through the pipe, so as to exhaust the air from the chamber. In this Way it can be used for exhausting steam from stationary engines as well as in boats.
The bilge-water, by turning the faucet g, may be drawn from the boat by means of the vacuum in the chamber D, which will cause the water, when the faucet is open, to run into the chamber D and out at the side pipe, which can be done either when the boat is in motion or at rest in water Where there is no current, by admitting a jet of steam through the pipe J into the side pipe, as before described.
When the boat is going in the opposite direction from that indicated, or is at rest in still water, the vacuum will not be formed in the chamber, when the valves e a will be closed 1. The chamber D, funnelshaped pipe B and valve e, combined with a device for discharging bilge-Water, arranged in the manner 3. The chamber D, funnel-shaped pipe B,
and for the purpose set forth. and valves e a, combined with a device for 2. The arrangement of the connecting rod discharging bilge-Water, as and for the puror link d, cranks 71, and b, and Valves c a, for pose set forth7 beloW the Water-line.
