SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,652, dated September 15, 189a.

Be it known that I, PER OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to sewing-machines, and is an attachment providing means for regulating and giving a uniform width to the seam of the garment sewed; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement, combination, and construction described and shown.

Figure 1 is an elevation of an end of the sewing-maehine provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is an oblique longitudinal section of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section.

presser-foot; 4, the bar carrying the presserfoot, and 5 a rod secured to the presser-foot rod 4: by the clamp 6, so as to extend at right angles therefrom and be held in arigid position thereto. scale 5. 9 is ahub on the rod 5, and is adapted to move along the rod as desired and to be clamped thereto by means of the set-screw 12 in the collar 9 of the hub. This hub 9 carries a loose ring 8, having secured thereto and extending laterally therefrom a guide-bar 10, having a foot 11 extending away from the rod 5, the foot being curved up at its toe so as not to be easily engaged by a garment on the bed of the machine.

In the drawings I have shown this foot connected to'a right-angle arm 10 of the guiderod 10. The object of this will be explained later.

In order to hold the ring 8 upon the hub 9, I provide a screw-thread upon the inner end of the hub 9, adapted to receive the nut 7, and

tween the ring and the nut. This also prevents the nut from being loosened as the ring 8 is turned.

The object of my invention, as previously stated, is to provide means for giving a uniform width to the seam. It is obvious that by adjusting the hub 9 on the rod 5 the foot 11 may be made to approach or recede from the presser-foot 4. The foot 11 rests upon the bed of the machine and is for the purpose, as is obvious, of preventing the cloth from passing farther to the right of the needle.

I When a narrow seam is required, the hub is loosened and shoved along the bar 5 toward the foot 4., and when a very narrow seam is required, in order that the need1ebar may not strike the guide-bar, I form in it the right angle 10 mentioned, thus drawing the bar away from the head of the machine with the foot underneath it.

The gage 5, being upon the top of the bar 5, is always in view and enables the operator to regulate the seam to the desired width.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A seam-guide for sewing-machines comprising a rod adapted to be clamped in a horizontal position to the presser-foot bar above the presser-foot by means of a clamp, and having a gage upon its upper surface, a sleeve upon the rod adapted to be moved longitudinally thereon and to be clamped thereto in any position desired by a thumb-screw, the sleeve carrying a loose ring and means for securing the ring on the sleeve so that it may be turned thereon, and a depending rod carried by the ring and extending to the machine-bed, and a curved foot carried on the right-angle extension of the depending rod, the extension being toward the presser-foot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2.
