To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, CHARLES SOHNOR- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ruler and Marker, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in rulers and markers, andis specially designed for use as a bias ruling and marking device, although it may be used for any purpose where it would be effective.

The object of my invention is the provision of a rule of simple and inexpensive construction which will be specially useful in tailoring or dressmaking and by means of which perfect measurements may be made and also the goods may be marked in order that the cutting may be rendered easy and accurate, thus producing a thoroughly practical and useful device for the intended purpose.

To attain the desired objects my invention consists of a combined ruling and marking device embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of my ruling and marking device, the sections of which are adjusted to assume a right angle. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the members adjusted to an acute angle of about forty-five degrees. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the adjusting-links between the members. Fig. 4 represents a detail perspective view of the marking device. Fig. 5 represents a detail vertical sectional view of the marking device. Fig. 6 is a cross-section thereof, and Fig. 7 represents a detail View of a modified form of my marker.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, in which similar numerals denote corresponding parts in the several figures, the numeral 1 designates one section or member of my rule, and 2 designates the other section, and said sections are each provided with the scales or graduations 3, which are of any desired size, according to the circumstances. These members are hinged at one end at 4, and the corners 5 adjacent to the hinge are inclined, the purpose of which is to enable the members to be adjusted to various angles or degrees, and to retain the members at various adjustments I provide the link connection 6, which consists of two sets of plates 6 having their inner ends retained together by a set-screw 7 and their outer members on each face thereof by means of the pins 8, thus providing a simple and efiicient connection between the members which will adjust them quickly to any desired angle. One of the members or sections (although both, if desired) is provided with a groove or channel 9, in which is placed the open tube or conduit 10, and in said guide fit the tongues 11, provided on each side 12 of the spring-plate 13, which is formed with the raised portion 14, forming a seat for the sleeve 15, in which bears the stud 16, upon whichis mounted the marking-wheel 17. In this form of marking-wheel 17 the edge of the wheel is smooth but beveled to make a clear mark upon the cloth, and in the modified form the wheel is formed with a serrated edge 18, as shown.

In using my device the members are adjusted to the proper angle and secured by the adjusting device, and the spring-plate carrying the marking-wheel is pressed down until the wheel rests upon the cloth or material, and the wheel is moved along and makes a clear m ark or indented line upon the cloth or material, enabling a person to accurately cut the material upon the line without defacing or marring the material.

The spring-plate which carries the marker normally holds the wheelup from the mate rial, and it is simply necessary to press the plate down to bring the wheel upon the material.

It is evident that I provide a ruling and marking device which is simpleandinexpensive and which is useful and practical.
