oAETRuGK AND BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION formingfrparf of Leiitersatent No. 567,48, dated September 8, 189B;
Y Application flied June 29, 139B. Serial No. 597,606. `(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- I Bo it known that I, HENRY C. WILLIAMSON, e.` citizen of the United States, residing et .Michigan Cit-y, in the countyT of La. Porte end Yskilled in the art to which it eppertuinsv to make end use the same.
My invention relates to a. novel constructionin u oer truck end brake, the object be- .ing to provide u. dureblesafe, and ecienttruck and brake; and it consists in the fea.- tures of construction end combinations of parts hereinafterfullydescribed end claimed. In the eccompen ying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a. top plan view of a truck and brake constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a. vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the line 2 2 Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the same. Fig; 4 is a. detail yview in elevation of the brake-boem I employ. Fig. is e detail sectional view of the snfetydoop for holding the brake-beam.
Referring now to seid drawings, A and B indicate the cor-Wheels, mounted upon axles l, running in bearings in the carfexle boxes 2, mounted in the usuel manner between the ends of the arch-bers 3 and tie-bers 4 of the Vtruck. At their middle portions seid arch c .nd tie bars 3, and 4 support o channel 5, which takes the place of the spring-plank of the ordinary wood trucks. Said channel 5 is secured to said arch and tie bars by menus of countersunk bolts 6, whichvpass down-fwardly through said channel 5 and through said arch and tie bers-3 and 4." Inthis men-4 ner the even surface of the web of the chennel 5 remains intnct to receive the hearingsprings 7. l
- Guide-hors S -ere secured to the sides of the channel 5 by means of lock-nuts or Y rivets. Seid guide-bers S extend upwardly to the upper arch-bari 9 andnre adopted to he engaged by the guide-hongos 10 on the ends of the boister 11. Said bolster 11 is constructed in accordance with Letters PatentNo. 560,011, granted to me November 19, V1895, and is supported upon the bearing-springs 7, which are secured to the webs of the channel 5 by means 'the wheels.
Vshoe vhangers 23 are of plete-s l2, which are secured te said chenel by Ineens of the blts13. Similar springplstes ere else secured to the upper ends of the springs and form seats for the bolster. The truck center plete 14 end side bearings 15 are preferably secured to said bolster by means of rivets, which are less liable to work 'loose than bolts. The construction of seid bolster 11 is slightly modied, inasmuch es the struts are elongated and the ends of the middle and end struts connected by Ineens 'of eplsize 1B, passinover the joint between the same, and secure by means of rivets passing through the flanges of seid struts and the compression member 17 of seid bolster l1.
Heretofore inside brakes have been hung very low, owing 'to the necessarily-limited Space betweenv the channel end the trends of By menne of my construction of the brckebeeins ido not require es much space es hes heretofore been required for the beam and brake-shoes, end mn, therefore, enabled to hang 4the seme above the lower fece' ofV the cheune. In this manner the brakeshoes and' brake-beams are protected from injury from obstructions on the track, such esdetached vportions of eers, defective crossing-plenking, and thelike. The greatest danger tothe brake shoes and beams, 11owever, arises from the detached portions of eers,which frequently cause derailrnent. l
By menus of my construction I overcome ell cf the above defects. 1 employ what I lterm a.;bra.keshoe anchor 18, from which the` broke-shoes depend. The scid brokeslloe anchor 18 consists of e platejliltprovided with in werdly-extending crine 20, which is secured to the upper srch-ber 9 of th struck, preferably by means of the column guide or transomcesting bolts 2l. Seid erms'20 ere provided at their inner ends', in slinement 'with thetreads of the Wheels, with outwardlyextending lugs 22, between which the brakeivotaliy mounted by mennsof bolts 24 [missing through openings in solid. lugs 22 and through the .eyes of the hangers 23. The brake-shoes, o'r more properly the brake-heads on the ends o fthe -brckcfbeams 26, src provided wit-l1 eyes 27, through which the hooks of the brake-shoe han gers 23 pass end support seid brake-shoes and broke-beams. Seid brake-shoehengers depend from seid broke-shoe anchor at en iis incline toward the treed ot the wheel, so that when the broke# are released they will he canned hy gmvlt' to move uwe f from the trentino( the wher-iu. lhe broken4 om primer are removably secured to uuid brukedtcndo in the uuunl manner. liy menno oi' this eon struction it will be noted that the broke-hws i 'ure dependent from n rigid portion of the truck, whose movements correntmnd with the movements ol' the wheels, thun insuring the vertical lmmovability of the brake-slums with relation to the wheels.
'lhe brake-beams .t-, for which an applic-:e tion for Letters luteut is pending, tiled Mu rch t3, 1895, Serinl No. 582,053, comprise u compression member 2H, whose ends nre titled in recesses ln said brake-heads :25, und a tension member 29, whose screw-threzuled ends pas:` through openings in said l.u'ake-hcails '.5 ndjacent the recesses iu compression member 2S ure held. :Said compression and tension members pass through openings in the ends of u strut. 30, which extends outwardly from the middle portion of said compression member to the middle bent portion of said tension member. The tension member is secured by means of the lock-nuts 3l on the ends ol' the same engaging the outer fut-cs of said brake-heads 25. The said struts 30am provided with inclined oblong; openings 32, in which the endsof the broke-levers 33 are pivoted. Said lnake-levcrs 33 are counectcd together adjacent their lower ends by means of n connecting-rod 34 passing: through the opening in the middle 1l, which is provided willi bifurented ends. in which said levers lll ure pvoted. Une of said leven-i313 is connected with the ln'nkeoperating devices, while the other forms :t deudlcver,nud is pivoted atV its upper end to n link 35, which is connected with the holster 11 by means of the hook 3o, which is prt-ferublycast in one piece with one of sold platee lti. This manncrof mounting the brake-lcvers is eommonnnd does not form part of my invention, except with relation tothe point l at; which the connectingwod 2li is plvoted thereto.
Secured to each side ol the channel 5 are what. I term safety-limpia" d?, in which the brake-hemos nre tnouuted. 'lhe one end of sold safety-loops is secured to the lower foce ofthe web of the channel 5 hy means of :t lock-nnt 38 und is bent. in nu outtvardlyex tending curve to the point Slt', thencenround und straight hack townnl the channel to the point ttt. 'lheotherend extends dowuwurdLv from this pointand is secured to the outer fuec ol' the llutnxc ol' said channel b v menus of the lock-nut. ll. 'Ihe tension member *."J of said broke-Immo '.ii rests port ion of said loop 2li' and is adapted to he guided thereby in such n nin-nner as to keep the outer fuee of the l'iruke-shms ulwuys pnr- 5 alle! with the trend of the wheel when the brakes are released.
