RAND-TRIMMER.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, EDWIN F. MAXWELL, of West Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rand-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a rotary rand-trimming cutter of the character shown in Letters Patent No. 549,67 6, dated November 12, 1895, and particularly to the loose circular guard shown in said patent, the object of the invention being to enable the guard to cover the outer ends of the knives and limit their action on the welt, and to be accurately adjusted with relation to the cutting-edges of the knives.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved cutter. Fig. 2 represents a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents in different views a section of the guard.

In the drawings, ct represents the cutter, which is composed of a hub 2 and blades 3 3 radiating therefrom, the said blades being formed substantially as shown in the abovementioned patent, excepting that their outer ends, instead of being beveled, are preferably blunt.

The hub 2 has a central orifice to receive the attaching-screw c, whereby it is attached to one end of a shaft d. The screw c has an enlarged portion c', of greater diameter than the orifice in the hub, said portion forming a shoulder which bears on one side of the hub and clamps it against the end of the shaft cl. The screw also has a head c2 at the outer end of the enlarged portion c.

e represents the guard which is formed to cover one side of the cutter, and has a marginal lip e', formed to project over theouter ends of the blades, as shown in Fig. 2, said lip limiting the entrance of the outer ends of the blades into the'rand. The guard is also provided with an adjustable bushing e2, which is formedto inclose the enlargement c of the attaching-screw, and is conned between the head c2 of said screw and the hub of the cutter, as shown in Fig. 2. The body of the guard has a threaded orice e3, which engages the threaded periphery of the bushing, said orice being of greater diameter than the screw-head c2, so that the guard may project outwardly over said head at its central portion, if desired.

It will be seen that the bushing enables the guard to be laterally adjusted to vary the projection of the lip e over the outer ends of the cutters, the bushing being confined between the hub and the screw-head, so that it has no appreciable endwise movement, althoughsaid bushing is suflicientlyloose to `permit the guard to be held stationary by contact withl the boot or shoe.

To maintain any desired adjustment of the guard, Iprovide it with a set-screw e5, adapted to engage the periphery of the bushing.

I claim- A rotary trimming-tool comprising a cutter having a hub and radiating blades, a guard having an annular marginal lip formed to cover the outer ends of said blades, and an adjustable bushing arranged t0 bear against the hub'of the cutter to determine the posi.- tion of said lip relatively to the blades, and means for connecting the cutter and guard to a shaft.
