SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,289, dated August 25, 1896.
Application filed February 6, 1896. Serial No. 578,217. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH B. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naples, in the county of Morris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rolls of paper and means for holding and feeding same to typewriters and which can be manufactured at small cost and readily attached to the Remington, 'Yost, Smith-Premier, or Densmore type-writers, without in any way changing any part of the type-writers.
Reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, showing a part of a carriage-frame of a typewriter. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a detailed View of the ratchet-wheel and spring-pawl. Fig. 4 is a detailed view. Fig. 5 shows a roll of perforated paper. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the core-roll and ratchet-wheel, partly in section.
In the drawings,M represents the top framepiece of a carriage-frame.
F is the platen-roller mounted on sliding bar H.
A is the paper-rest, and E is an upright piece mounted on frame M and having curved arms at the top for supporting the paper-rest.
The roll of paper R is mounted on the paper-rest by means of the uprights O and 0, held on the paper-rest by means of lugs L, made integral with the lower ends of said uprights and by means of clamping devices consisting of rod 70, washer m, and a milled nut 71.. Each of the uprights has three lugs L, two above the paper-rest and one below. The ends of the paper-rest are held between lugs L. The rod works on top of the paper-rest. This rod has ahead 9 on one end. This head g has a sleeve 77., in which rod is inserted. The other end of rod 70 is threaded. A combined washer m and nut n, held together by sleeve r, operates on this threaded end. The attachment is adjusted on the paper-rest and then tightened or clamped by means of nut 17.. Upright O has a slot g for adjusting the rolls of paper. The paper is manufactured and rolled on small wooden core-rolls d. The corerolls are provided with metal journals d,
which have bearings in uprights O and O. A ratchet-wheel c is made integral with one end of the core-rolls. A spring-pawl f is attached to uprights O and pressed against the ratchet-wheel. This spring-pawl serves to prevent the paper from unrolling too fast and also to hold the roll back in slot g. The paper-rolls can be made to contain as much paper as desirable, thirty feet, if necessary. Paper in a continuous sheet is most useful in taking long newspaper messages. Paper for business letters is prepared by perforating the paper and making the sheets any length desirable. When the writing is finished, the paper can be cut off with any convenient paper-cutter, which may be attached to the carriage-frame in front of the platen-roller.
It will be seen that I have constructed an attachment by which the loss of time in putting sheets of paper in the type-writer is avoided, since when one letter or message is finished the sheet or web of paper is cut ofi, leaving the end already under the platenroller to commence a new message or letter.
The attachment can be manufactured at small cost on account of its simplicity. The paper-rolls can be made any width desirable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment for type-writers consisting of uprights C, and O, provided with lugs L, on the lower ends thereof, said lugs being arranged to clamp the paper-rests on typewriters, a rod is, provided with head g, on one end and threads on the other end, a combined washer m, and nut 07., operating on said rod, said uprights and said lugs being tightened on said paper-rests by said rod and nut, a coreroll for paper provided with journals, and a ratchet-wheel made integral with one end of said roll, a spring-pawl attached to upright O, for registering with said wheel, said roll being mounted in said upright, and paper wound on said core-roll.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a roll of perforated or unperforated paper, a wooden core-roll for said paper provided with a ratchet-wheel made integral with one end of said core-roll, suitable uprights in which said roll is journaled, means for clamping said uprights to the paper-rests of type-writers, and
said core roll to the paper-rests of type- 10 writers.
