M.TREMBLAY.
RAILWAY SWITCH. I
Patented Aug. 18, 1896 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
MAROEL TREMBLAY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO PIERRE LUSSIER, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
RAILWAY-SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 566,281, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed April 27, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARonL TREMBLAY, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of llfassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Switchesg and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in railway-switches; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a front view of a car having thereon the switch-opcrating mechanism embodied in my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 1, the flooring of the car being removed. Figs. 3 and 4 represent detail views of portions of the mechanism.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the diiferent figures.
A designates the platform of a car, on the under side of which and on opposite sides of the center thereof are secured the brackets B, consisting of the uprights O with a lower cross-plate D thereon.
E designates the frame, consisting of a bent rod having one end passing upward through the platform A and provided with a foot rest or head F, accessible to the foot of the operator of the car. The other end of said rod is provided with a socket carrying a sliding piece G, to which is secured the switch-lever H. The center of the frame or rod E is vertically formed and passes through an opening in the plate D. A coiled spring J encircles said vertical portion of the frame and bears at its upper end against a shoulder K thereon and at its lower end against said plate D, thereby normally raising said frame and keeping said switch-lever H above the switch-rail L.
Pivoted on the platform A is a lever M, the lower end of which is pivoted to the sliding pieces G, so as to operate the same in oppo- Serial No. 589,153. (No model.)
site directions. The track-levers H are provided with narrow necks N, which move in slots on the under side of the socket end of the frame E.
The manner of operation of the device is evident. It will be seen that either of the frames E may be depressed at the pleasure of the operator, so that a single track-lever may move the switch on either side of the car, or both may be employed, if necessary, a single movement of the lever M moving both track levers, so as to place said levers in condition for changing the switch when depressed by the frame F.
It will be seen that the mechanism herein described is simple in its operation, durable in character, and easily repaired if injured.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A frame having an end extending above a suitable support, the other end provided with a socket, a hanger or bracket supporting said frame, a spring bearing against said bracket and normally raising said frame, a sliding plate movable in said socket and carrying a depending track-lever, said parts be ing combined substantially as described.
2. A platform, a dependin'g hanger secured to the under side of said platform, a frame having an end passing upwardly through said platform, a vertical portion passing through an opening in said bracket and another end portion provided with a socket, a spring bear.- in g against said bracket and normally raising said frame, a sliding piece in said socketed end carrying a depending track-lever, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A car-platform, a hanger secured to the under side thereof, a frame guided on said hanger and having an end projecting through said platform and another end provided with a socket, a movable piece in said socket having a depending track-lever, and a lever pivoted to the said platform and connected by a rod with said sliding piece, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A platform, hangers on the under side and on opposite sides of the center thereof,
frames supported on said hangers and carry- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ing track-levers, and a lever pivoted on said in presence of two Witnesses.
1 I his platfoim between said f1 ames and having 1 {1 T rods connecting its lower end with sliding f 5 pieces Which are connected with said trackw levers, said. parts being combined substan- 0 R, BROWN tially as described. ALLEN HIGGINBOTTOM.
