JAMES M.'BAILEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR TRUINGIAND DRESSING PIPE S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,123, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed August 30, 1895. Serial No. 560,987. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. BAILEY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Truing and Dressing Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification 1o in which Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, of my improved attachment for truing and dressing oif pipe. Fig. 2is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation I 5 of the head, carrying the dressing-dies and the truing-rollers; and Fig. 4 is aside elevation, partly broken away, of the said head.
My invention relates to the finishing of pipes and is designed to provide means for removing the rough bur which is left by the cutting-dies used for cutting off the pipes,
and also to make the end portion of the pipe true and cylindrical, so that it shall be in proper condition to receive the thread.
2 5 In the drawings, in which similar numerals indicate corresponding parts, 2 represents an end plate or port-ion of aframework, to which is pivotally connected the horizontally-swinging frame 3, carrying the head 4, which is of less diameter than the interior of the pipe,
and is provided with stationary cutting-dies 5. These dies, as shown, have angular or inclined cutting-faces of such shape that they will enter and engage the extreme end por- 3 5 tion of the pipe and cut away the rough bur which is left by the cutting-dies. Four of these dies are shown, any desired number being capable of use in the head, and between these cutting-dies are provided a series of truing-rollers 6, which are mounted upon radial slides 7. The rollers are preferably tapered slightly toward their inner ends and are removably held in place by the cap 8. To move the roller-carryin g slides outwardly, 5 I provide the central tapered mandrel 9, which projects axially within the head and is adapted to contact with the inner inclined faces of the slides. To operate themandrel,
the truing-rollers thus spread and brought into action. This lever is pivoted to a lug 11, projecting from a hollow guide 12, secured to the frame This guide is provided 5 5 with a vertical slot 13, through which extend the trunnions 14 of a collar 15, which is secured to a sleeve 16, fastened to the mandrel 9. To hold the sections of the'head in place,
I preferably surround their inner portions with a spring-ring 17.
In Fig. 1 Ishow the frame in two positions, the position in full lines showing it moved forward so that the head shall enter the end of the pipe, it being locked in such position by a key 18 or other suitable means, while the dotted lines show it swung back into inoperative position.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: After the rough end of the pipe has been severed by the cutting-dies the frame is brought into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and as the .pipe is revolved by the operation of the machine the mandrel is moved inwardly by its operating-lever, so as to cause the truing-rollers to press against the inner portion and by their lateral pressure make it cylindrical, the dies at the same time trimming off the bur left by the cutting-dies.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, since the present crude and expensive methods of shaping the pipe and removing the bur are done away with and these operations easily and quickly performed.
Many variations may be made in the form of the dies and the rollers and the general arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention, since What I claim is 1. The combination with a machine, having means for holding and revolving a pipe, of a head pivotally supported upon the machine so as to be swung into or out of operative position, said head being provided with truing dies or rollers arranged to be inserted within the end of the pipe, and having means for expanding said dies; substantially as described.
2. The combination witha machine having means for receiving and revolving a section v of pipe, of a swinging head supported upon the machine, said head carrying trimmingdies provided with cutting edges, and means for forcing said head into the end of the pipe during its revolution; substantially as described. v
3. The combination with a machine having means for receiving and rotating a pipe-section, of a swinging head arranged to enter 10 the end of the pipe, said head having trimming-dies provided with inclined cutting faces, and having also expansible truing dies or rollers, and means for expanding said dies or rollers; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES M. BAILEY. Witnesses:
