To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ABIJAH YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mercur, in the county of Tooele and State of Utah, have invented a new anduseful Desulf urizin g and Condensing Apparatus for Base-Metah Ores, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to desulfurizing and condensingapparatus for base-metal ores; and it has for its objects to provide an improved apparatus of this character, which might properly be termed a mnftled furnace, for the treatment of base-metal ores which carry any bases that can be volatilized by heat and condensed again, thereby saving all the base metals and at the same time rendering the ores in the best possible condition for milling.
With these and'other objects in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novelconstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is 'a perspective view of a desulfurizing and condensing apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of one of the condenserpipes. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view ofthe connection between the gas-escape pipes and the roasting-cylinder.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates an inclosed furnace of a suitable length that is provided within its opposite ends with the opposite end fire-boxes 2, having therein the fuel-supporting grates 3,which support the fires that provide for heating the interior of the furnace, and said furnace is further provided at a central point between the oppositely-located fire-boxes 2 with the central draft-flue 4:, which extends laterally outside of the furnace-casing and is connected with the lower end of the smoke-stack 5, thereby completing a' construction of furnace in which the draft of the smoke and other products of combustion is from the opposite ends toward the center thereof, in order to insure a uniform and thorough heating of the roastin sections of a suitable length and suitably connected together at their meeting ends, and the said cylinder is of a sufficient length so as to extend throughout the entire length of the furnace and to be supported at its ends within the end walls of the furnace. The cylinder 6 is so arranged within the furnacecasing that the same is out of contact with the top, sides, and bottom of the furnace-casing to leave heat-circulating spaces entirely around the exterior of the cylinder, whereby the heat and other products of combustion have access to every part of the cylinder to provide for a thorough heating thereof. The roasting-cylinder is oval in cross-section and is provided with converging upper sides 7, which meet at the top of the cylinder to form an upper inverted-V-shaped portion which serves as a collecting-chamber for the gases arising from the ore which is roasted within the cylinder, and in one of the inclined sides 7, forming said upper inverted -V- shaped collecting-chamber, the cylinder is further provided with a series of gas-pockets 9, into which the gas readily escapes from the upper inverted -V- shaped portion of the cylinder, and the function of which pockets will be hereinafter more particularly referred to, it being further noted that the said upper portion of the cylinder confines the accumulated gas in such a narrow space or area'as to insure its ready escape into pockets 9.

The opposite ends of the cylinder 6 are inclosed by the removable cylinder-heads 10, suitably secured in position and provided with the outwardly-extending stuffing-boxes 11, which receive the opposite ends of the conveyer-shaft 12, which has mounted thereon a screw conveyer 13. The screw conveyer 13 extends the entire length of the cylinder 6 and is arranged to work directlywithin the cylinder, on the rounded bottom portion thereof, so that the ore will be slowly carried from one end of the cylinder to the other, on the bottom thereof, and will thereby be continuously subjected to the action of the heat within the furnace during its travel from one end of the cylinder to the other, and the opposite shaft extremities of the conveyer-shaft project beyond the ends of the cylinder, and
one of which extremities has mounted thereon a belt or gear wheel 13, which is geared with an engine or other suitable motive power ,to provide for the rotation of the conveyer the feed-chute 16, which projects into the cylinder 6, at one end thereof, is arranged an inclined deflecting-board 18, which deflects the ore onto the bottom of the cylinder at one extreme end of the screw conveyer and at the same time forms a cut-off to prevent the gases which have risen into the upper portion of the cylinder from finding an escape through the feed-chute thereof.
The contraction 16 at the lower end of the chute 16 is disposed directly at one side of the deflecting-board l8. and serves to direct the ore directly onto said board, and at the same time prevents a too-rapid flow of ore into the roasting-cylinder.
At the end opposite the enlarged end portion 14 the cylinder 6 is provided in its lower side with a discharge-opening 19, into which the roasted ore is delivered by the screw conveyer13, and from the opening 19 the roasted ore discharges through a chute 20, leading into the upper side of a cooling-bin 2l,into which the roasted ore falls and is allowed to cool. The bin 21 is built in an elevated position and is provided at its lower side with a discharge-opening 22, communicating with a carway23, built below the said bin and accommodating therein a track for a car or other suitable wheeled receptacle, which is filled with the ore from the cooling-bin and is designed to carry the same to the mill, as will be readily understood.
Each of the gas-pockets 9 in one top side of the roasting-cylinder 6 has fitted thereto the inner end of a short curved gas-escape pipe 24, which extends through the top of the furnace-casing and projects beyond one side of the same, so as to be joined with an upright condensing-pipe 25, a series of which pipes are arranged at one side of the furnacecasin g.
In connection with the operation of the con densing-pipes it will be noted that the spray of water which is jetted into the fumes or gases not only provides for the condensation thereof, but atthe same time it will be obvious that by reason of the spray or jet of water practically filling the entire area of the pipes 25 such spray or jet, as it passes the outer ends of the gas-escape pipes 24, will produce a partial vacuum or rarefication at such points and thereby induce a suction or draft in the pipes 24, which will positively insure a circulation of the gases or fumes from the interior of the roasting-cylinder 6 into the condensing-pipes, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of the furnace, a roastingcylinder arranged longitudinally within the furnace, said cylinder being oval in crosssection and having an inverted-V-shaped up per portion forming an upper contracted gas collecting chamber, a conveyer arranged longitudinally within the bottom portion of said cylinder, an inclined deflecting-board depending within the cylinder at one end thereof, a feed-chute projecting into the cylinder at one side of said deflecting-board, and a series of gas-escape pipes connected with the inverted- V-shaped upper portion of the cylinder between the defiecting-board and the opposite end of the cylinder, substantially as set forth.
