SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 565,012, dated August 4, 1896.

Beit known that I, JACOB ADOLE MoLLER, Jr., of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Top, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in bottle-topsg and it has for its object to provide atop so constructed that it will open and close parallel with the mouth of the bottle to be closed, so that the cork will be pressed evenly on the mouth `of the bottle, and to provide a means whereby the cork will be given more room than is provided under the old form of bottle-top.

Another object of the invention is to provide a screw-t0p for bottles which will be connected with the bottle either in the opening or the closing of the top, and whereby, further, when the top is opened and is carried over to the closed position it will always engage with the thread.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge connection between the bottle and the top, which hinge connection will not in any wise interfere with the storage of the bottle, being practically within the plane of both the top and the side of the bottle at which it may be located.

A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a bottle-top in connection with which there will be but little sealing and in which all the parts will be readily made by 1nachinery, thus rendering the top exceedingly economic.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawin gs,formin g a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspon ding parts in all J[he figures.

Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a flask having the improved top attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the iiask-top and thehinge connecting it with the body of the flask. Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation and partial sectional view of the flask, having the top attached, the top being open. Fig 4@ is a similar view to Fig. 5, in which the top is shown in its engaging position with the thread of the flask. Fig. is a view illustrating the top in a closed position on the flask. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the hinge, and Fig. '7 is a rear elevation of the top removed from the iiask.

1n carrying out the invention the ask A is provided with the usual neck 10, which is itted with a thread 11. The topBcompriscs a cap 12, which is preferably of somewhat semispherical form, and is adapted to contain a packing materiall, preferably of cork. The cap is provided with a neck-section 14, and the said neck-section has formed therein a thread l5, corresponding to the thread 11 on the neck 10 of the flask or other object to which the top is to be applied.

The exterior surface of the neck of the cap where the thread occurs is depressed, forming an upper and a lower shoulder, and between these two shoulders a band 16 is loosely mounted, concealing the thread 15 of the cap or top, and the said band may be ornamented in any approved manner; and preferably this band at its unornamented surface` is practically flush with the exterior surface of the neck of the cap or top. The thread 15,which is produced in the neck of the cap or top, is duplicated exteriorly for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and the band 16 eftectually conceals this threaded portion.

The hinge C is a sliding hinge, and comprises a member 17, which is pivotally oo nnected with the neck 10 of the flask or other article to which the cap or top is to be applied; and the said pivoted member 17 slides in a boxing 18, the said boxing being secured in any suitable or approved manner to the band 16. The attachment between the member 17 of the hinge and the neck 10 of the flask or receptacle may be termed a hinged connection, since suitable knuckles are made on the said neck and on the aforesaid member 17, through which a pin or pintle 19 is carried.

The hinge or pivotal member 17 of the hinge ICD to the collar formed on the aforesaid neck Vl0 and dividing the neck proper from its threaded surface 11. Thus it will be observed that there is always a parallel motion between the cap or cover and the neck of the flask or receptacle when the two parts are to be connected or disconnected.

It will be further obvious that the band 16, being loosely mounted on the cap or cover, permits the latter and t-he hinge member 18 connected therewith to ascend or descend, as occasion may require, and that the cover or cap will be held, as shown in Fig. 3, in such position that when it is carried over the neckV of the bottle it will instantly take the thread of the latter. Furthermore, the cork-receiv ing receptacle in the cap or cover may be enlarged to such an extent to permit of better expansion for the cork than in other covers of this description.

It is likewise Obvious that after the cap or coverhas been unscrewed from the receptacle or iiask it will remain connected therewith, thus avoiding the possibility of being lost, and by simply throwing the cap or cover over the neck and turning the former a union of the two 'may be expeditiously and conveniently accomplished, and since the pressure of the sealing material 13 is directly vertical on the mouth of theflask there will be little or no possibility of an escape of liquid from the latter when the cover or cap has been properly screwed to place.

Having thus described my invention, -l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a bottle-top or the like, a neck-section, a hinge secured to the said neck-section, a top slidably and rotatably connected to the hinge, and means for locking the top tothe neck by a rotary movement, substantially as de-` scribed. 2. The combination of the threaded neck, the top threaded to interlock therewith, and a connection between the neck and top, the said connection being provided with a proj ection engaging the thread of the top, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the threaded neck, the top threaded to yinterlock therewith, a hinge constructed in slidably-connected seetions, one of which is pivoted to the neck and the other is so connected to the top that the latter can rotate independently of the sliding hinge member but will slide in unison therewith, the pivoted hinge member having a projection engaging the thread of the top, as and for the purpose specified.

4. The combination, with a neck of a bottle having an exterior thread, a top adapted for parallel movement with the mouth of the bottle in its attachment thereto or detachment therefrom, a slidinghinge connection between the cover and the bottle-neck, aband loosely mounted upon the cover, being attached to the said hinge, and a cushion contained in the cover, adapted lfor connection with the neck of the bottle, whereby the action ot the cushion is vertical on the neck of the bottle, permittin g of a great expansion of the said cushion when engaging with the said neck, as and for the purpose specified.

` 5. The combination, with the threaded neck of a receptacle, a cap provided with a cushion adapted for engagement with the outlet of the neck, a hinge constructed in sliding sections, one of which is hinged to the neck and the other having sliding contact with the hinge member, a band loosely mounted on the cap and connected with the sliding portion of the hinge, and a projection from a member of the hinge, following a thread upon the cap, as and ,for the purpose specified.

6. The combination, with the threaded neck of a bottle, of a top adapted to be screwed thereon, a hinge constructed of sliding members connected with the neck and having' a Vswivel connection with the top, a member of the hinge being adapted to follow the thread of the top, whereby the top when closed may always be made to receive the thread of the neck, as and for the purpose specified.
