Description

UNITED STATES CHARLES IV. KIMBALL AND MARY E. NORCOTT, (ADMINISTRATRIX OF THE PATENT OFFICE.
ESTATE OF W. J. NORCO'IT, DECEASED,) OF SPRINGFIELD, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES FOR RELIEVING STEAM-CYLINDERS OF WATER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,500, dated July 17, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that C. W. KIMBALL and W. J. NORGOTT, of Springfield, Hampden county, Commonwealth oi Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful .Valve Attachment for Steamylinders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists of an arrangement for opening and closing small valves at each end of the cylinder of a steam-engine used for the purpose of letting` ont what water may be formed in the ends by condensation of the steam while the engine is stopped.
In the drawings,'Figure l is a partial longitudinal section of a steam-cylinder having` this invention attached'.` Fig. 2 is a partial crosssection of the same. Fig. 3 is another longitudinal section, showing the valve open and steam or water passing out in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a smaller scale view, showing the valve attached to a cylinder and the manner of operating the same from the rear end of the locomotive.
The construction ot' this invention is simple, consisting only ot' the valves P P in each end of the cylinder, which are raised by the piece or rod A, which is formed in two inclined planes at B B, and is Free to slide in its snpports G C. The rod A, being pushed forward, presses the nut a of the valve upward and opens the valves, allowing the steam to pass through freely, `which forces out the water in its passage. The rod being pulled backward,
the pressure of the steam inside of the cylinder immediately closes the valves, their own weight being sufficient to close them.
Then used on a locomotive-engine this invention may be connected with the rear of the engine, so that the valves may be opened by the engineer in the cab by a rockershaft, E, passing across the engine, and having on each side an arm, F, attached to which the rod A is pivoted. Between these arms F F the arm G is attached to the shaft, and to the end of this arm G a rod is attached passing back to the cab of the locomotive, and there suitably arranged so as to be under the control of the engineer, or by any other simple mechanical arrangement.
When used 011 a stationary engine the rod may be moved by means of a simple handle attached at the end of it.
1n order to secure the rod in either position with the valves open or shut, we arrange the spiral spring H and pin K iittin g into the notches m m in the part B B.
aNow, having described this invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rPhe combination of the valves P P and the rod A, formed, as described, with the cylinder of a steam-engine, and suitable mechanism for operating` the same, substantially in the manner land for the purpose herein set forth.
C. INT. KIMBALL. l MARY E. NORGOTT. Witnesses:
