UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. DEHN, OF IRON MOUNTAIN, MICHIGAN.-
S EWER-GAS TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,475, dated July 2 1, 1896.
Application filed February 14,1896. $eria1No. 579,228. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. DEHN, of Iron Mountain, in the county of Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Sewer-Gas Trap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved sewer-gas trap which is simple and durable in construction, perfectly proof against sewer-gas, not liable to siphon, and readily accessible for cleaning and other purposes.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan viewof the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The improved sewer-gas trap is provided with a trap-body A, provided at one side and near the lower end thereof with an inlet-pipe B, and from near the top of the body leads downwardly an outlet-pipe C. A valve D is adapted to close the inlet-opening of the inlet-pipe B, and this valve extends in the body A and is pivoted on a clamping-pivot E, held on a cap F, screwing in the lower end of the body A.
The cap F is provided with an apertured and externally threaded lug F, normally closed by a small cap G, which, when removed, permits of securing a hose to said lug F to connect with a water-main or with a force-pump to remove any stoppage in the outlet-pipe O. The upper end of the body A is provided with a vent-pipe H, connected with said body by a suitable coupling I of any approved construotion.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described the body A contains a large amount of Water for forming a perfect seal for the pipe B, and is not liable to be broken by siphoning.
In case the body A or adjacent parts are clogged up, the matter can be readily removed by unscrewing the cap F to get at said matter. In case the stoppage is beyond the trap, a hose connected with a water-main 01' force-pump is connected with the lug F, as previously explained, so that the valve D closes and the water forced from the watermain exerts a pressure on the stoppage matter to force the same into the sewer. Thus it will be seen that by this method of cleaning stoppaged waste-pipes it will not be necessary to make a joint in the pipes or disconnect the pipes from the fixtures.
It will be seen that the trap can be drained if located where it is apt to freeze, the cap G being for this purpose removed from the lug F. The valve D is then closed against the opening of the inlet-pipe B, so as to prevent sewer-gas from passing through the empty body A into the pipe B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sewer-gas trap, provided withabody, a cap screwing in the bottom of the body, and carrying a valve for closing the inlet to the said body, and a small cap screwing on an apertured externally-threaded lug located on said first-named cap, substantially as shown and described.
2. A sewer-trap provided with a body, a screw-cap forming the bottom of the body, a valve carried by the cap and capable of closing the inlet of the body, and a supplemental cap commanding an orifice in the first cap, substantially as described.
GEORGE J. DEHN.
