Description

(No Model.)
. J.- H. WARD.
DOOR STOP AND RETAINER.
No. 564,237. Patented July 21, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOOR STOP AND RETAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,237, dated July 21, 1896.
Application filed March 9, 1896.
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. WARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door Stops and Retainers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a device embodying said improvement. Fig. 2 is a view thereof in central vertical section.
The object of the improvement is the production of a device in the nature of a doorstop.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A denotes the piece or casting carrying the buffer and spring. h denotes the long arm affixed thereto carrying the spring.
' The letter a denotes the bufier, practically of rubber, borne in the socket b.
The letter 0 denotes a spring cooperating with the buffer. By preference it is attached to a part which is integral with the socket b.
The combined buifer and springare pivotally attached to the base 01, which is adapted to be fastened by suitable means, screws, for instance, to a base-board or other suitable backing.
The letter 6 denotes a screw which serves as the axis for the said pivotal attachment. It runs through the bifurcated boss e, which Serial No. 582,856. (No model.)
. rises from base d, and also through the hingedowel f, appurtenant to the combined buffer and spring. The lower part of the periphery or edge of this hinge-dowel is serrated, and the letter g denotes a set-screw adapted to cooperate with these serrations, to the end that the combined buffer and spring may, within proper limits, be set at any desired point of pivotal adjustment.
It will be readily understood that the bufffer a is the stop against which the door strikes. The spring 0 not only softens and lessens the impact, but it also holds the door in position after it has reached the buffer and there stopped.
I claim as my improvement-- The herein-described improvement in doorstops, consisting of the piece A, having short arm-socket b, carrying bufier a, long arm h carrying spring 0, and dowel f, in combination with base-piece d, provided with means whereby it may be attached'to base-board or wall, bifurcated boss 6, for cooperating with dowel f, and set-screw g, whereby the spring and buffer .portion may be adjusted at any desired angle with the wall, substantially as specified.
JOHN H. WARD.
