HANDLED CLAMP FOR HOLDING PLOWSHARES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,097, dated July 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES NERUD, of Elroy, in the county of Juneau and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Handled Clamp for Holding Plowshares, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to tools for handling short landside-plows, and is designed to provide a more durable and simple tool than the tongs generally employed in repairing plows of the character mentioned, and, further, to provide a tool more efficient than the tongs in firmly clamping the share and landside, and more readily adjusted to and removable from the plow.

The invention consists in the novel details of construction hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a back view of the improved tool, showing the same applied to a short landside-plow. Fig. 2 is a broken view of the front side of the tool, on a larger scale, the brace for engaging the share being in section. Fig. 3 is a broken plan view. Fig. 4 is an end View, the share-brace being omitted; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views showing the manner of applying the share when using the invention.

In constructing a tool embodying my invention an elongated handle A is formed, of suitable strength and desired cross-section, preferably in the shape of a fiat bar, and at the front end said handle is formed with a transverse head A. At one end of the head a lug B is formed at about right angles to the surface of the head, and at the opposite end the head is returned on itself to form a hook-like device 0, in the bend of which a hole 0 is tapped for the reception of a setscrew D, which may be screwed into said hole 0 or into a threaded hole formed in the lug B at the opposite end of the head A. The bend of the hook-like device 0 and the lug B are tapped in lines at an angle to each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and in this way a connection with the head A thus formed the offset end E of a bar E is employed to complete the clamp for the plow, the bar E ranging longitudinally of the handle and being riveted thereto, as at e e. The offset end E is substantially like the hook C, but projects substantially at right angles with the latter, the two forming a socket for receiving the landside 15, and in which the plow is fastened by means of the set-screw D, which is turned by inserting any suitable bar or rod in the eye 01 thereof.

Rearward of the head A a curved transverse orifice is formed in the handle A and in the enlargement or boss e of bar E, as shown at a, Fig. 2, in which orifice a curved brace F is adjustably held by a set-screw F, the brace ranging in general at right angles to the direction of the head A. This brace forms a support for the heel of the share 10 and is formed with a threaded stud f, which is adapted to enter one of the bolt-holes in the share, as in Fig. 1, a cap-nut f, formed with an eye f for receiving a suitable tool, serving to complete the connection. At its end the brace F is formed with a bend f on which the share may be given a firm bearing when engaged by the stud f.

The improved tool possesses the'desired strength to withstand a tendency to bend when heated, it enables the share to be rigidly held against shifting or turning when being sharpened or welded, does away with the more cumbersome tongs, affords a ready and wide range of adjustment, firmly holds a loose landside to the share while repairing the same, and prevents all springing of the plow while sharpening or pointing.

Reference to the drawings, particularly Figs. 6 and 7, will show that the share is applied by passing the heel thereof under the hooks C and oifset end E, and causing the screw D to engage the share at the landside end. The brace F is also adjusted to reach the outer portion of the share, so that the stud f may pass through one of the openings in said portion and be secured therein by the nut f.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described tool for holding plowshares, comprising an elongated handle, a clamp consisting of a transverse head on the handle, the head being returned 011 itself at one end and formed with an opposing lug at the opposite end, a bar extending longitudinally of the handle and secured thereto, the bar having an offset front endwhich ranges at about right angles to the returned end of the transverse head and forms a socket in connection with such returned end, the latter and the opposing lug being tapped in lines at an angle to each other for the reception of a set-screw carried by one of them, and a brace adjustably held to the handle in the rear of the head, the brace ranging transversely to the head and curving forwardly, one end of the brace being curved upwardly, in addition to the general forward curve, and carrying a screw-stud and nut for engaging it with a share, substantially as described.

A clamp for plowshares, the same comprising a handle having a transverse opening therein, a transverse head projecting from one end of the handle, share-securing devices at each end of said head, a brace extended transversely through the opening in the handle, said brace having at its outer end means for securing the share and means for adjustably securing the brace, substantially as described.

A clamp for plowshares, the same @0111- prising an elongated handle, a hook at one end thereof, a transverse head projecting from the end having a hook and provided with a share-securing device, a bar extending longitudinally with the handle and having one end terminating adjacent to the hook and having said end bent said bent end and the hook forming a socket, and a brace extending transversely from the handle and at a point between the ends thereof, the said brace being curved and adjustable and having a sharesecuring device carried at its outer end, substantially as described.

4:. A clamp for plowshares, the clamp comprising a handle having a hook at one end and a head projecting transversely from said hook, the head having a lug at its outer end, a bar extending longitudinally with the handle and having one end terminating adjacent to the hook on the same, the said end of the bar being also formed with a hook juxtaposed to the hook on the handle, and a brace extending transversely with the handle and capable of connection with the plows'hare, substantially as described.

5. A clamp for plowshares, the same comprising a handle having a hook at one end and having a transversely-extending head projecting from the end having the hook, the outer end of the head being provided with a lug adapted to engage the plowshare, and a brace extendin g transversely with the handle and at right angles to the plane of the head, the said brace being adjustable on the handle and having at its outer end means for connection with the plowshare, substantially as described.
