SEPARABLE STUFFlNG-BOX GLAND.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM R. REEOE and JEAN B. PRIMM, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in separable Stuffing-Box Glands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to an improved stuffing-box gland; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and designated in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved stuffing-box gland, the same being separated and disconnected from the stuffing boX. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the improved gland, showing the separate pieces connected. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the gland, showing the same connected to a stuffing-box, the stufling-box being in section.
The object of our invention is to construct a stuffing-box gland of two separate pieces, so that the gland can be readily attached or detached from the piston or pipe upon which it is located.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the improved gland, which is constructed longitudinally of two mating pieces 2 and 3, and formed on one side of each piece is a semicircular projection 4. These projections are so constructed that when said pieces are connected they will form a cylindrical sleeve, which presses upon the packing 5 around the piston-rod 6. p
The stuffing-box is of ordinary construction, and the description of same will be omitted.
Formed on each side of the pieces 2 and 3 of the gland 1 is a perforated ear 7. These ears 7 are so formed that when the pieces 2 and 3 are placed together, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the ears on one piece will overlap the ears on the other piece. These ears are staggered, so that one ear of each piece comes on top and one ear of each piece comes on the bottom. This makes a double cross wind around the piston-rod and aids materially in perforated ears are to allow one end of the gland-bolts 8 to be inserted, the opposite end being connected to the head 9 of any ordinary cylinder or the like.
The gland-bolts S are each constructed with a nut 10, so that the gland can be drawn up and tightened against the packing 5, as required for making stuffing-boxes air or steam tight.
The operation is as follows When the gland is applied to a stuffing-box, as illustrated in Fig. 8, and it becomes worn or broken and it is desired to remove it, the operator removes the nuts 10 from the gland-bolts 8, which will allow the gland to be disengaged from the stuffing-box, and after the gland has been disengaged from the stuffing-box the pieces 2 and 3 can be separated, so that they can be readily removed from the piston-rod, pipe, or anything to which it is applied without interfering with said connection. The contrary motion is performed for applying a new gland.
It will be plainly seen by inspecting the drawings that the gland can readily be applied to a stuffing-box and removed without interfering with the piston or any of its connections.
What we claim is In a stuffing-box, the gland 1, comprising the two mating pieces 2 and 3, the semicircular projection 4 on each of said pieces, said projection being so constructed as to form a cylindrical sleeve which presses upon the packing 5 around the piston-rod 6, the perforated ears 7 formed on each side of each of the pieces 2 and 3, said ears being staggered and arranged to overlap each other so that the perforations are in alinement to allow of the insertion of the gland-bolts 8, all arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes stated.
