CORN-HUSKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,861", dated July 14, 189e.

To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. JANNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Huskers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for husking corn, and this application is intended as a division of my pending application, Serial No. 561,930, filed September 9, 1895, for corn-h ushers and stock-cutters.
My invention consists in the constructions and combinations set forth in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a corn-husking machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of one of the husking-rolls, showin g my improved husking-pin and the manner of applying the saine. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the husking-pin. Fig. a is an end elevation in detail of a portion of the bushing-rolls.

In the said drawings, a a represent a frame having at each end cross-bars a a', in which are journaled the huskingrolls D. These bushing-rolls are arranged in pairs and geared together at one end by spur-gears h b2. One roll of each pair is also provided with a beveled gear b3, which meshes With a similar beveled gear ZJ* on a transverse driving-shaft c. Between the respective pairs of husking-rolls there are placed triangularly-shaped longitudinal bars d,which assist in guiding the cornears along the respective bushing-rolls. Each of the husking rolls is provided along its length with a series of bushing-pins h6. These pins consist of rectangular pieces of steel or similar material, which are iitted in corresponding openings in screw-threaded sleeves 1)?. Each end of each of these pins is cut off at an angle, as shown, and the pin is fastened into the sleeve bl by a key b3, which passes through the pin and sleeve, the construction being such that when one end of the pin becomes Worn it may be reversed in the sleeve after removing the sleeve from the roll, The
husking-rolls are preferably formed of castiron and hollow. The sleeves are preferably formed of brass or other malleable material, and each is provided on its outer periphery with a tia-nge b9, adapted to be riveted down on the periphery of the roll when the sleeve is screwed into the same, so that the pins will all stand With their greatest Width in the line of rotation of said roll. Each of the rolls b is further provided With a series of grooves b5, which are adapted to stand opposite the husking-pin of its supplemental roll.
It will be understood that the huskingrolls are arranged at an angle in the usual Way and that the frame supporting the saine may be supported in any suitable manner so as to form part of the usual corn-husking Inachines which embody feeding and stripping rolls, and, if desired, stock-cutting machines, these features being now Well known and forming no part of the present invention. The ears of corn to be husked fall on the husking-rolls, which, rotating in pairs toward each other, Will, through the agency of the husking-pins, cause the husks to be engaged by the respective rolls and drawn through the rolls, While the ears pass off at the lower end thereof. To provide for more readily discharging the ears from the bushing-rolls after they have reached the lower end thereof, I construct said rolls b at the ends with reduced portions b1, having projections bu. These reduced and extended portions on the different rolls of each pair are arranged so that they stand opposite each other as the rolls are revolved, and the extended portions are brought successively in contact with the ears of corn, which tends to agitate the saine and cause them to drop from the rolls into the chute or conduit, which carries them to the elevator or other suitable point of discharge.
The power to drive the shaft may be transmitted from any suitable source through any suitable gearing, such as shown at c', connected to the other portions of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a corn-husker, a series of huskingrolls having bushing-pins, each consisting of IOO a rectangular bar inserted into a screwthreaded sleeve, and means for reversing said bar in said sleeve, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the husking-roll, of a screw-threaded sleeve having a iange of malleable metal, and a bar of hard material inserted in said sleeve, said bar being reversible in said sleeve, substantially as specified.
The combination with ahusking-roll, of a screw-threaded sleeve, a rectangular bar inserted in said sleeve, said bar being ont orf at an angle at opposite ends and projecting in opposite directions from said sleeve, and a removable key for retaining said pin in said sleeve with either end projecting from said sleeve, substantially as speeiiied.
4. In a corn-husker, a series of huskingrolls7 of husking-pins, each consisting of a rectangular bar having inclined ends7 as described, and inserted through a screw-threaded sleeve, and a fastening,r device for said bar by means of Which the bar can be removed and reversed as described, and a flange of malleable metal on said screw-threaded sleeve, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a corn-husker, a series of inclined husking-rolls having husking-pins and oppositely-arranged grooves, each of said rolls being reduced at the lower or discharge end having projections extending along the periphery of said rolls,substantially as specified.
