BEDSTEAD-BRACE AND MATTRESS-SUPPORT.

Be it known that I, JAMES D. WILTEONG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Mills and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Braces and Mattress-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw-v ings,and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective means for bracing the frame of a bedstead, as well as to form a support for the mattress; and it consists in providing transverse angle-bars, which are connected to each other and to the bedstead, the centrally located angle-bars being connected to each other by adj listing-screws and the diagonal rods attached to the side rails of the bedstead, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bedstead-brace and mattress-support constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

The corner-posts of the bedstead are provided with eyes or staples a a, and the head and foot boards are provided centrally with eyes or staples a, while the side rails A have staples a attached thereto at a short distance from each end.

The bedsteadbrace or mattress-support is practically made up of two sections, each consisting of two transverse angle-bars B and B, connected. to each other by longitudinal wires 11, which are attached at their ends to the upper members of said angle bars, the ends which engage the angle-bars B being bent around the lower edge of the depending members thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. Each section of the bedstead-brace or mattress-support is also provided with intermediate transverse wires I), which are laced through the longitudinal wires and connected to the end wires by being twisted around the same, diagonal rods or braces 0 being also provided, and are connected to the transverse an gle-bars. The angle-bars B are so positioned and connected to the wires 1) h and C that when the sections are connected to the bedstead, as hereinafter described, the depending members of said angle-bars will be adjacent to each other or abut, if necessary, and these depending members are provided with apertures on a line with each other to receive bolts 02-, having nuts (2, so that the sections of the bedstead-brace or mattress-support can be tightened when in place.

The bedstead-brace or mattress-support, consisting of the two sections hereinbefore described, is connected to the bedstead by links e, which engage the eyes or staples a and a and the transverse angle-bars B, and also by links 6, which are attached to the eyes or staples a and to the diagonal rods G, the rods being bent at their point of attachment, as shown at c, to prevent the links slipping thereon.

The device hereinbefore described can be applied to an ordinary bedstead, and when attached and adjusted will provide an effective bed-brace as well as a support for the mattress, the sections being adapted to be tightened or drawn toward each other to form a rigid support.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1 The combination with a bedstead having eyes or staples attached thereto as shown, of the brace and mattress-support consisting of two sections connected to each other by bolts and adjusting-nuts, each section being made up of end transverse angle-bars and longitudinal and transverse wires connecting the same, as well as diagonal rods, together with links connecting the sections to the eyes or staples of the bedstead, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with a bedstead having the brace and mattress-support consisting of two sections connected to each other by bolts and adjusting-nuts, each section being made up of end angle-bars B and B, longitudinal wires 1), cross-wires b and diagonal rods C having bends 0, together with links e and e connected to the mattress-support and to the eyes or staples on the bedstead, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
