PILLOWQOR CUSHION.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,941, dated June 30, 1896.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM VOGLER, of Somerville, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pillows or Gushions, of which the following is a specification; and I hereby declare that the following is a full,

I clear, and exact description of the invention,

which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has for its object the production of a novel pillow or cushion composed of metal, and relates to that class of devices shown and described in my Reissue Letters Patent Nos.11,508 and 11,514, dated, respectively, October 15, 1895, and November 19, 1895.

In the present invention I have made the end and the-central supports of flexible or yielding material, as coiled-wire springs, and have made other improvements which will be hereinafter described.

My invention consists of certain novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a construction embodying my invention, Figure 1 is a top or plan View of my improved pillow or cushion. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the springs forming the improved pillow or cushion. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of a spring-wire, the obj ectof which is to flll up the outer edge of the pillow or cushion. Fig. 5 is a detail View of a flexible or yielding rod located on opposite sides of the cushion and connected to the end supports. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the flexible central support which is composed entirely of coiled springs. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a portion of said central support and showing a spiral nut of coiled wire for connecting together the separated parts of said central support.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.

My improved pillow or cushion is composed, essentially, of a series of spring-wires A, having, preferably, two branch arms A A provided at their free ends, respectively, with coils A and A". while. at the junction of the Serial No. 581,492, (No model.)

arms A and A the wire is coiled at A in the form of springs.

In assembling the pillow or cushion,the coils A of each spring-wire are strung upon the coiled-wire spring 0, and the coils A and A of each spring-wire are strung, respectively, upon the upper and lower flexible supports 13' and B of the flexible central support B, composed of coiled-wire springs.

At opposite sides of the pillow or cushion there is arranged a flexible or yielding rod D for the purpose of keeping the pillow or cushion square on the opposite edges and assisting in holding the pillow or cushion in shape, and said rod is provided at each end with an eye D, which at each end fits around the flexible end supports 0 011 the opposite ends of the pillow or cushion. Connected to said rod, near its center, are the eyes B and B of the upper and lower coiled springs B and B of the central coiled-wire-spring support B. When weight is supplied to the said pillow or cushion, the said rod D yields and moves outwardly from its center with the ends of the coiled springs B and B and thus takes up the slack of the cover.

In order to fill up the outer edge of the pillow or cushion, I have provided a spring wire E, having an eye E at one end and a coil E at the opposite end, and at the edge, where the coil A causes a space to be left, I locate said spring-wire E, with the eye E around the coiled-wire-spring support G, and the coil E around the central support 13, and, as shown in the drawings, such a space would occur at the opposite edges of the cushion, and the same is shown at the lower right-hand edge and upper lefthand edge of Fig. 1. As will be understood from said figure, the coil A makes a space at said edges, and in order to fill up the said edges the spring-wires are located as shown.

For the purpose of holding the spring-wires upon the supports B and O, I have provided a screw 0, which enters the coil O and is provided with a washer G which bears against the ends of the support 0 and holds the coils A in place, and on the central support B, I have arranged spiral nuts 13 on the upper and lower portions 13 I3 and said nuts are adapted to be screwed up against the coils or eyes which are located on the said central support B, and thus with'the screw 0, with Washer 0 hold the springs A and E and rod D in proper place.

In Fig. 7 I have illustrated a construction where, in the event of the coiled-wire springs B breaking on the ends between the spiral nuts a spiral nut 13 is provided to be screwed on the separated portions, and thus hold the separated parts of said coiled-wire springs together.

In a pillow or cushion as above described there are provided flexible or yielding supports for the ends of the springavires as well as for the coils located between the ends, and thus there is provided a pillow or cushion which is yielding or flexible in all directions, owing to its supports being constructed of flexible or yielding means.

The screws 0 and the washer 0 used for holding the spring-wires upon their supports, are not claimed in this application, but are claimed in an application filed of even date herewith and having the Serial No. 581,t91.

I do not limit myself to the arrangement and construction shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus ascertained the nature of my invention and set forth a construction cmbodying the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a pillow or cushion, a series of spring wires coiled between the ends thereof and arrc nged in opposite rows, a flexible support to which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, a flexible support for each row to which said spring-wires are con nected located in the said coils of the said spring-wires,a support to which the lower ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, and spiral nuts composed of coiled Wire located on the flexible supports to which the upper and lower ends of said spring-wires are connected and adapted to be adjusted thereon to hold the upper and lower ends of said spring-wires in place.

2. In a pillow or cushion, a series of springwires provided with a coil between the ends thereof and arranged in opposite rows, a coiled-wire-spring support to which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are con nected, a coiled-wire-spring support for each row to which said spring-wires are connected located in the said coils of the said springwires, and a coiled-wire-spring support to which the lower ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected.

3. In a pillow or cushion, a series of springwires provided with a coil between the ends thereof and arranged in opposite rows, a flexible support to which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, a flexible support for each row to which said spring-wires are connected located in the said coils of the said spring-wires, and a flexible support to which the lower ends of said spriu g wires of both rows are connected.

4'.- In a pillow or cushion, a series of spring wires provided with a coil between the ends thereof and arranged in opposite rows, a flexi ble support to which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, at flexible support for each row to which said spring-wires are connected located in the said coils of the said spring-wires, a support to which the lower ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, and a rod located on the opposite edges of said pillow or cushion and connected at its ends to the flexible supports located in the said coils of the opposite rows of spring-wires.

5. In a pillow or cushion, a series of spring wires provided with a coil between the ends thereof and arranged in opposite rows, a flexible supportto which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, a flexible support for each row to which said springwires are connected located in the said coils of the said spring-wires, a flexible support to which the lower ends of said springwires of both rows are connected, and a rod to which the upper and lower flexible supports are connected and located on opposite edges of said pillow or cushion and connected at its ends to the flexible supports located in the said coils of the opposite rows of spring wires.

6. In a pillow or cushion, a series of springwires provided with a coil between the ends thereof and arranged in opposite rows, a flexible support to which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, a flexible support for each row to which said spring wires are connected located in the said coils of the said spring-wires, a flexible support to which the lower ends of said springwires of both rows are connected, and a flexible rod on the opposite edges of said pillow or cushion to which the upper and lower flexible supports are connected and connected to the flexible supports located in the said coils.

7. In a pillow or cushion, a series of springwires provided with a coil between the ends thereof, a support for said spring-wires located in the said coils, flexible supporting means consisting of coiled-wire springs to which the free ends of said spring-wires are connected, and spiral nuts composed of coiled wire located on said coiled-wire-spring support and adapted to be adjusted thereon to hold the free ends of said spring-wires in place.

8. In a seat or cushion composed of aseries of spring-wires, flexible supporting means consisting of coiled wire for supporting said spring-wires, and one or more spiral nuts composed of coiled wire located on said coiledwire-spring support and adapted to be adjusted thereon to hold said spring-wires in place.

9. In a pillow or cushion, a series of springwires provided with a coil between the ends thereof and arranged in opposite rows, a

coiled-wire-spring support. to which the upper ends of said spring-wires of both rows are connected, it coiled-wire-spring support for each row to which said spring-Wires are connected located in the said coils of the said spring-wires, a coiled-wire-spring support to which the lower ends of said spring-Wires of both rows are connected, and a fiem'ble rod to which the ends of the upper and lower coiled- Wire-spring supports are connected and located on the opposite edges of the said pillow l l i l
