SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,830, dated June 30, 1896.

Application filed March 28, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, RICHARD A. HUNCIL- MAN, of New Albany, in the'county of Floyd, and THOMAS M. BARBEE, of Corydon, in the county of Harrison, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in stoves and more particularly to such as employ wood for fuel, the object of the invention being to provide a stove with a device by which the draft can be readily regulated and the removal of ashes, 850., facilitated.

lVith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating our improvements, portions being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view.

A represents the body of the stove, which will be provided with a suitable lining of sheet or cast iron.

The stove will be provided in its top with an opening a for the insertion of fuel and with an opening I) for the attachment of a stove-pipe. The opening a is surrounded by a cast-iron collar a, and is normally closed by a swinging cover B, made in the form of an urn for containing water and provided with a coiled-wire handle 0, by which it can be operated, said swinging cover being pivotally connected with the cast-iron collar a. By making the handle 0 of coiled wire ample provision is made for the circulation of air through it, and it will not therefore become highly heated. A plate (L2 is preferably disposed within the collar a for the reception of a cooking utensil when the cover B shall have been swung around.

The lower portion of the stove is made with a rectangular opening cl, from the edges of which flanges e e f f project, the outer edges of said flanges being made with ribs g. To one of the flanges 2 one end of a hollow Serial No. 543,562. (No model.)

rounded box-shaped door C is hinged, the free end of said door having a latch 71 to engage a keeper h on the other flange 6. The door is also provided with a knob i, by means of which to operate it. The door'or box, when closed, communicates with the opening 61 and fits over the ribs g, whereby to form a tight fit with the flanges e f.

A vertical pipe or flue D communicates at its lower end with the door or box C and terminates at a point preferably at or near the top of the stove. The top of the pipe D is provided with a pivoted damper j, whereby the amount of draft passing into the stove through the pipe D and box or door C can be easily regulated.

' From the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that a device is produced which effectually serves a twofold purpose-via, to afford ready means for withdrawing ashes, 6130., from the stove and to provide simple and efiicient means for accurately and conveniently regulating the draft through the stove. When the door or cover'G is swung around, access can be had to the interior of the stove through the box formed by the flanges e f and opening cl, not only for withdrawing ashes, &c., but also for easily applying fire for starting the fire in the stove. l/Vith the exception of the provision hereinbefore described for the draft the stove will be air-tight.

Our improvements are simple in construction, easy to manipulate, and effectual, in all respects, in the performance of their func tions. 7

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a stove, the combination with a body portion having an opening at its upper end for the reception of fuel, of a door at the lower end for removing ashes, and a pipe or flue independent of the stove and opening into this lower door and provided with an air-damper at its upper end, substantially as set forth.

2.
