' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,279, dated June 16, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILSON BROWN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Power MeateOhoppers, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to construct a power meat-chopper which can be driven by belting and the parts of which can be readily detached for cleansing or repairs; and a further object of my invention is to provide for the easy running of the chopper.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal View of my improved meatchopper. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing the ballbearing.
A is the base-frame of the meat-chopper,hav ing two standards a a', on which are mounted the bearings a2 for the shaft B. On this shaft are a fast pulley b and a loose pulley b. Secured to the front of the frame A by bolts CZ is the meat-chopper casing D, having a hopper D. In the standard a of the frame A is a recess a3, forming with the casing D a receptacle for lubricating material.
On the end of the driving-shaft Bis a head B', having a cavity b2, in which the rear end e of the feed-screw E rests. This end and cavity are so formed that the feed-screw will turn with the shaft, but is loose in the head, so that it will accommodate itself to the casing. l Back of the flange of the head is a hardened metal plate b3, resting against balls f, confined between the two plates f' f2, which are recessed to receive them, and these two plates are secured together by rivets, so that they form a ball-bearin g washer, the balls being so arranged between the plates that they cannot become detached should the washer be removed from the machine. The balls rest against a hardened bearing-disk F, abutting against the face of the standard a, so that pressure caused by the perforated plate bearing against the knife will not interfere to any great extent with the free rotation of the sh aft and as the lower portion of the disk carrying the balls is below the level of the lubricating material in the receptacle, the lubrication of this part of the machine is insured. The shaft B can be readily removed by simply withdrawing the feed-screw E, detaching the caps `through which the belt passes.

Screwed onto the casing D is a ring D2, conining a perforated plate D3 in position against the knife E. The ring D2 has an annular recess d', formed by the annular flange and the lip d2. This lip rests directly against the plate, and the recess is sufficientto receive the end of the casing, so that by this arrangement the plate can be adjusted to a greater extent than heretofore, to take up the wear. The screw E has a spindle e', which extends through the knife and rests in a bearing in the perforated plate, as clearly shown.
G is the belt-shifter rod, having the frame g, This rod is adapted to guideways d3 on the hopper D and is 4connected at h to a shiftinglever H, which is pivoted to the hopper at h', so that on moving this lever I-I the belt can be shifted either onto the fast or loose pulleys.
I claim as my inventionl1. The combination in apower meat-chopper, of the frame having two standards, a casing secured to the face of one of said standards, a shaft adapted to bearings on the standards, a head on the shaft, an antifriction thrust-bearing between the head andthe standard, a feed-screw adapted to the casing ,and connected to the shaft, with a cutter and a perforated plate and means for adjusting the plate in respect to the cutter, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a power meat-chopper, of the frame A, standards a a', boxes on said standards, a casingD secured to the front of the standard a and forming with the frame a receptacle for lubricating material, a shaft B having a recessed head, a feed-screw having a shank adapted to a recess in the head of the JOHN WILSON BROWN, JR.
