WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,240, dated June 16, 1896.
Application filed September 13, 1895. Serial No. 562,383. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM POWE, of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Washing Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to improve the means for mounting the plungers of washing-machines so that they maybe more effectively supported by means other than the tub, and also so that they may be readily disconnected from the tub when it is desired to empty or otherwise manipulate the latter.
To this end the invention consists in certain peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally embodied in the claim. A
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement, portions of the tub being broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sleeve and post with which the operating-lever and plunger slide. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sleeve that embraces the post shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sleeve which is attached to the plunger-shaft.
The bench 1 is provided with a standard 2, to the upper end of which the angular casing 3 is rigidly secured, by means of two downwardly-projecting portions 4, which embrace the standard. Rigidly secured in the casing 3 is one arm of a U-shaped bar 5, the ends of both arms of the said bar being held by means of a link 6, which is seated in notches formed in the said ends. Freely movable on the upper arm of the bar 5 is an angular sleeve 7, which carries a perpendicular post 8, the same having its upper end threaded to receive a nut 9, and being adapted to have a sleeve rotatably mounted thereon. This sleeve 10 is formed at its upper portion with two opposing lugs 11, and with a collar at its lower portion,
from which project two oppositely-arranged trunnions 12.
The lever 13 of the washing-machine comprises ahandle and two parallel bars 14, which are rigidly secured to the handle, and have their rear extremities pivoted to the trunnions 12 of the sleeve 10. Extending between the bars 14: of the lever is the shaft 15 of the plunger 16, and this shaft is provided with a mutilated sleeve 17, comprising a middle portion, having longitudinally-projected arms 18 extended in opposite directions, which arms are adapted to lie alongside the shaft 15, and carry the clips 19, which embrace the shaft, and are clamped against the same by suitable bolts passing through the lugs 20 of the clips. Pivotally mounted between the lugs 20 of the upper clip 19 is one end of a link 21, which has its other end pivotally mounted between the ears or lugs 11 of the sleeve 10.
The plunger 16 is of the usual funnel type, and is adapted to operate on the clothes within the tub 22, as is usual in the class of washing-machines to which my invention belongs. It will be seen that by means of the construction above described, the plunger is mounted for universal movement and its support is independent of the tub, so that the tub may be taken from the bench whenever it is desired, without interfering with or causing displacement of the plunger and its supporting mechanism.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a bench, of a standard rigidly supported thereon, a casing at its upper end, a'U-shaped bar having one arm held by said casing, a sleeve movable on the remaining arm of the bar, a lever pivotally supported by the sleeve, and a plunger connected with the lever, substantially as described.
