UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL COERPER, OF COLOGNE, GERMANY.
ELECTRIC-RAILWAY SYSTEM, 80G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,216, dated J une 16, 1896.
Application led April 4, 1896. Serial No. 586,158. (No model.)
To all wiz/0m it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CARL COERPER, a citizen of the German Empire, anda resident of Cologne, in said Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Railway Systems with Transformers and Secondary Conductors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved electric-railway system with transformers and secondary conductors.
In electric railways with secondary conductors in which the current is supplied by means of transformers of any approved conr struction with stationary or rotary windings, it is required for economical reasons to switch the transformers into circuit, as they are necessary for supplying the required current to a car as it moves over the secondary conductors. This object is obtained by arranging the individual secondary conductors so that they overlie each other at their points of connection in such a manner that the overlapping ends of the secondary conductors are coupled parallel with each other by the contacts which serve for transmitting the current to the car. In this manner a portion of the secondary transformer-current is transmitted from the secondary conductor into the secondary transformer-circuit of the adjacent secondary conductors. The second transformer, however, will receive only so much current as is necessary for its magnetization. In the secondary circuit of this transformer is located a magneto-electric switch device, which when the transformer is magnetized is called into action, so as to close the primary circuit of the transformer. By the closing of the primary current the transformer which belongs to the respective secondary conductors is called into action and supplies, at first, a portion, and, finally, the entire quantity of the required current to the car, as soon as the same has moved onto the corresponding secondary conductors. On the other hand, the action of the transformer of the adjacent secondary conductors is discontinued as soon as the contact devices on the car leave the overlapping sections of the secondary conductors, so that the magneto-electric switch device is placed out of action and interrupts thereby the supply of primary current to the transformer.
In the accompanying drawing, a diagram of my improved electric-railway system is shown, in which the overlapping portions of the secondary conductors are shown at the lower part of the figure, while the conductors for the primary current are shown at the upper part of the same. The transformers, as well as the magneto-electric switch devices for supplying or discontinuing the primary and secondary currents, are arranged intermediately between the secondary conductors and the primary conductors.
I do not desire to claim any special construction of the magneto-electric switch devices for closing and interrupting the primary current, as any approved construction may be used for this purpose, the device shown in the drawing being merely intended to give a diagrammatic representation of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An electric-railway system, consisting of primary conductors, overlapping secondary conductors, transformers interposed between the main and secondary conductors, and magneto-electric switch devices, by which the primary windings of the transformers are automatically switched in as soon as the contacts on the car connect the overlapping portions of two adjacent conductors parallel with each other, and by which the primary windings of the transformers are likewise automatically cut out as soon as no further current is required on the adjacent secondary conductors, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL COERPER.
