SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,098, dated June 16, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES I. RHONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marine Velocipedes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a water-bicycle; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of the parts, as hereinafter pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the ac-, companying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a rear view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a side View of a wheel to be used for transportation of the device on land. Fig. 5 represents a front View thereof. Fig. 6 represents a similar view of the same, but has a smaller attaching-ring adapted to clasp the tube in a smaller portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letters AA indicate two tubes, which taper from the front to the rear and may be constructed of aluminium or other suitable material, and they have a lining B of guttapercha to render them pneumatic, and which lining may be filled with cork O. The tubes A A are joined together by curved braces D D D? D and are fastened to the tubes by screws a. To the central brace D is adjusted on a rod 1), which may be raised or lowered, a saddle E, forming a seat for the rider, and on an arm F is arranged a steering-handle G, having on its lower part a pulley H, around which is placed a cord or chain I, which passes around a center pulley J and is then divided into two branches, one passing to the right around pulley K on the center brace D and then to a pulley L on the rear brace D and is then connected to an eye on the rudder M, while the other branch passes to the left hand to a pulley N on the central brace D, thence to a pulley O on the rear brace D to anfeye O on the rudder M.
To the brace D is connected a bifurcated armfiP, in which is arranged a sprocket-wheel R on a shaft S, having its ends formed into foot-treadles T for imparting motion to the device. To the brace D is placed a paddlewheel U, made in two sections, with a central connection forming a hub U, around which passes an endless flat-link chain U and connects it to the sprocket-wheel R.
The letter V indicates a guard attached to the central brace D to shield the rider from the splashing water of the paddle-wheel.
The letter W indicates a wire-netting which is placed on the front of the device for the same purpose.
The letter Y indicates a wheel journaled in a clamp, the uppers of which are constructed to fit the tubes and fasten thereon by means of a thumb-screw d, the wheels being four in number and are to be used in transportation on land.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described apparatus for use as a water or land vehicle, in which are combined the following instrumentalities: the parallel buoyant tubes A, transverse braces or guides D, D, D, D, a saddle mounted adjustably on one of said guides D, a paddlewheel mounted in another of said braces D, a bracket P attached to the brace D, two sprocket-wheels one mounted on the paddlewheel and the other on a treadle-shaft in said bracket, and geared together by a suitable chain, a'treadle or treadles on the treadleshaft in said bracket, a rudder M, a ruddershaft, a steering device mounted on the brace D and suitably connected to the rudder-shaft, guards V, W, one attached to the brace D in rear of saddle, and the other attached to the buoyant tubes at the front of the apparatus, hangers depending from the tubes, and road-wheels mounted in said hangers, all substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
