SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,056, dated. June 16, 1896.
Application filed March 9, 1896- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois,have invented a new and useful Automatic Check-Line Distributer for Corn- Planters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to corn-planters having check-row attachments and automatic reels for winding the check-line; and its obj ect is to provide means for automatically distributing the check-line on the reel as it is wound up. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a rear elevation of a planter equipped with my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the rear portion of a planter equipped with my device with a part of the frame broken away and the axle and my device shown in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the rear portion of a planter equipped with my device, having the seat-brace broken away so as to show the mechanism for operating the distributing-arm. Fig. 4 shows the threaded axle-sleeve. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through the distributing-arm and actuating mechanism. Fig. 6 is a View of the distributing-arm. Figs. 7 and S are detail views of the nut or disk which engages the threaded axle-sleeve. Fig. 9 is a viewof the outer sleeve which encircles the threaded sleeve. Figs. 10, 11, and
12 are details of the mechanism for actuating the distributing-arm.
In the drawings, A is the axle; W, the wheel; F, the frame mounted on the axle.
The seat S is mounted on the standard 8 and braced in front by the bar 3, extending ,forward and downward to the casting R,
which incloses and rests upon the rock-shaft R. Between the legs of the standard 3 is borne the automatic reel B, which is keyed to a shaft b, journaled in suitable brackets b I), attached to the legs of the standard 5. The axle A bears the sprocket-wheel a, which by means of the drive-chain O and the sprocketwheel 0 operates the reel B.

The arm 0 hangs downward and backward, so as to be in front of and in close proximity to the axle of the planter, about midway the length of the arm, and is provided with an eyehole 0 at its lower end, the edges of which are extended backward in a funnel-shaped circular flange 0 (see Fig. 5) in order to guide the check-line with minimum friction. The arm O is also provided with the slot 0, Fig. 6.
On the axle A is rigidly attached the sleeve 2, which is threaded or grooved with a spiral thread from right to left and which turns backward into another similar thread from left to right, intersecting the first thread each time it encircles the sleeve and turning back into it at the end, as shown in Fig. 4, the whole thus forming a continuous thread. It may be described as a compound reversing endless screw. Over the fixed sleeve 2 fits the laterally-movable sleeve 3, having on its lower side a projecting portion 3 with a flat face in contact with the distributing-arm O. The distributing-arm O is loosely held to the face of the projection 3 by the bolt a, passing down through the slot 0. The flanged washer 4, Figs. 11 and 12, fits over the bolt and works in the slot and is held in place by an ordinary nut 4- on the bolt. 1
A circular opening in the upper side of the sleeve 3 is surrounded by the low circular flange or collar 5, having ears 5 5. In this circular opening fits the disk 6, concave 011 its lower surface, so as to fit snug over the cylindrical sleeve 2, and having a downward projecting ridge or flange 6, which fits into the thread on the sleeve 2, the disk 6 being of suitable thickness to be held in place by a key or cotter passed through the ears 5 5, and with its flange forming a sectional nut. The sleeve 2 revolves with the axle when the planter is driven forward, and the sleeve is carried backward and forward by the nut traveling in the thread on the sleeve 2, the motion being reversed each time the nut reaches the limit of the thread in which it is traveling and is turned backward into the other spiral. The distributing-arm O is thus vibrated backward andforward, swinging on its pivot at j, the washer 4 on the bolt 4 having play in the slot 0. The distributingarm 0 thus occupies, successively, the positions shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The end of the check-line L lying on the ground and ready to be reeled up is threaded through the eye of the distributii'igarin O, and thence passed up and attached to the reel, Figs. 1 and 2. As the planter is driven forward straddling the line the reel Winds it up, drawing it through the eye 0, which, as it vibrates back and forth, distributes it on the reel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, in a corn-planter, the main axle and the supporting-Wheel carried thereby, the reciprocating distributer carried directly by said aXle,an d the reel driven from said axle, substantially as described.
2. In combination, in a corn-planter, the supportin g-Whee1s,the axle carryin g the same, the reel, the reversely-threaded sleeve fixed directly to said axle,the distributer,the sleeve carrying the same fitted to said threaded sleeve, and the follower, for engaging said threads, carried by said second sleeve, substantially as described.
3. In combination in a corn-planter, the supportingavheels, the axle earryin g the same, the reversely-threaded sleeve fixed to said axle, the second sleeve fitted to said threaded sleeve having a cup-shaped socket therein, the follower having a rounded face fitted to said socket, the projection on the folloWerengaging said threads, and the distributer carried by said second sleeve, substantially as described.
4. In combination, in a corn-planter, the Wheels, the axle carrying the same, the frame, the reel mounted therein, the reciprocating sleeve, the distributer-plate having a central slot therein and the end guiding-eye, the bolt carried by said sleeve adjustable Within said slot, the nut carried by said belt for clamping the same in adjusted position,the shaft R carried by said frame, the seat, the support there for, and the clamp carried by said shaft R, said clamp holding the lower end of said support and the upper end of said distributorplate, substantially as described.
