EAR-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,893, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed March 27, 1896. Serial No. 585,040. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT J ANSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ear-rings, the objoct of the same being to provide a screw ear-ring with a pendent setting in which the diamond or other precious stone is secured, so that when the diamond shakes the same will be rendered more brilliant than if it were stationary, said setting being hung in front of a reflecting platinum front plate; and the further object of the invention is to provide a clamping-plate with a swiveled. head, so that when the head is turned for moving the clamping-plate along the threaded shank of the front plate, and clamping the lobe of the ear between the front plate and the clamping-plate, the latter will not turn, and thus cause, by reason of its serrated engaging surfaces, the abrasion of the skin, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved ear-ring. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a circular or other shaped mounting or front plate, the exposed surface a of which is preferably platinized, so as to increase the brilliancy of the diamond b, which is mounted in its setting or drop B directly in front of said front plate, said setting to this end being provided with an eye b", which receives an eye a, projecting forwardly from the upper part of the front plate. Said front plate is further provided with a central rearward lyextending shank or stem 0, which is screw threaded at its outer end and passed through the lobe of the ear in the usual manner with screw ear-rings.
D represents a flaring annular clamping member which is provided with an exterior annular shoulder and at its outer end with an outturned flange cl, whereby the hollow skeleton-like head E is retained by its inturned edge e, fitting loosely between said shoulder d and the flange cl, so that said head can swivel and rotate on said clamping member. The outer portion of the skeleton head E is provided with an internally-screwthreaded socket e, which receives the screwthreaded outer end of the stem 0 of the front plate A. lVhen the stem 0 of the front plate A is passed through the lobe of the ear, its screw-threaded end will extend behind the ear, so that the clamping member D with its suitable head E can be placed over said stem and the latter screwed onto the stem C. When the head E is screwedinwardly, it will rotate without causing the turning of the clamping member I), and hence the abrasion of the skin by the roughened or corrugated periphery D of the clamping member prevented. Of course the corrugations are only rough enough so as to assist in preventing the axial displacement of the ear-ring after the clamping member has been tightened.
By the constant vibration which the diamond or other stone will be nearly always subjected to its color and brilliancy will be brought forth in a more brilliant and changeable manner, and hence this forms an advantage over the ordinary screw ear-ring. Furthermore, besides the advantage of swiveling the head E onto the clamping member D, there is the advantage of lightness in said head and, besides, a certain ornamentation imparted to the same because of its skeleton formation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. An ear-ring, consisting of a front plate provided with a central screw-threaded stem that can be passed through the lobe of the ear, said front plate having a forwardly-extending eye at its upper part, a setting or drop containing the diamond or other precious stone and provided with an eye engaging the eye of the front plate, said drop being arranged directly in front of the front plate and means applied to the screw-threaded central stem of the front plate for securing the ear-ring in position. substantially as set forth.
