CHILDS CARRIAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,412, dated June 2, 18961.

Application led February 3, 1896. Serial No. 577,896. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MOODY M. MAs'riN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hicksville, in the county of Deiiance and .State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghildrens Carriages, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to childrens carriages, and has for its object to provide an improved mechanism for steering the saine by means of mechanism connected with the front axle and adapted to be operated by the person pushing the carriage. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of a childs carriage embodying my improved construction, the body and wheels of the carriage being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the running-gear with my improvement attached.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 denotes the running-gear of the carriage, the same being of any ordinary construction and having the front axle 2 centrally pivoted to its bolster 3 by means of the bolt 4 and the rear axle 5, fixed to said running-gear in the usual manner. Suitable springs 6 serve to support the body of the carriage, as will be readily understood. Attached to and projecting from the rear of the running-gear is the handle 7 of the carriage, curving upwardly and rearwardly, as shown.

Connected to eyes 8 in the front axle 2 on each side of its pivotal point are the rods 9, crossing each other diagonally and connected at their rear ends to the ends of the substantially T-shaped rocking arm 10, pivoted centrally upon the rear axle at 11 and having its central member 12 extending somewhat to the rear thereof, as shown. A lever 13, pivoted intermediate its length to a lower cross-bar let on the arms of the carriage-handle 7, is swiveled at its lower end to the end of this member 12 and has its upper end extending engaged ina slot 1G `in a second cross-bar 16 on the arms of the handle when in its central position, owing to the fact that the pivotal point of said lever is slightly to the rear of a straight line drawn between said slot and the point of connection between the lever and the central member 12 of the rocking arm 10.

From the above description the operation of my improved construction will be understood to be as follows: When the upper end of the lever 13 is in the slot 16 and retained thereby against lateral displacement, the rocking arm 10 will be held in its central position, and through it the front axle 2 and the wheels carried thereby will also be retained centrally, as shown in Fig. 1; but when the lever 13 is disengaged from the slot 16 and moved to the right or left by the person pushing the carriage the front wheels will be correspondingly turned in a direction opposite to the movement of said lever, as shown in Fig. 2, thus through the intermediate mechanism described steering the carriage in the desired direction at the will of said person.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a childs carriage, the combination with the body and wheels thereof, the running-gear, and the handle for propelling the same, of a ixed rear axle, a pivoted front axle, a T-shaped rocking arm pivoted to the rear axle, diagonal rods .connecting said front axle and rocking arm, and a lever pivoted intermediate its length and swiveled at its lower end in the rearwardly-projecting member of said rocking arm and projecting upward therefrom to Within proximity to the handle proper of the carriage, substantially as described.

2. In a childs carriage, the combination with the body and wheels thereof, the running-gear, and the handle for propelling the same, of a fixed rear axle, a pivoted front axle, a T-shaped rocking arm pivoted to the rear axle, diagonal rods connecting said front axle and rocking arm, a lever pivoted intermediate its length to the carriage-handle and swiveled at its lower end in the rearwardlyprojecting member of said rocking,` arm and projecting upwardly therefrom to Within proximity to the handle proper of the earriage, and 2L Gross-bar on said handle having a slot therein with which the upper end of said lever is adapted to engage When in its central position7 substantially as described.
