AXLE-SKEIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 560,495, dated May 19, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HAEsKE, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Axle-Skeins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication.
This invention is an improvement in axleskeins; and its object is to remedy a defect which has heretofore caused much trouble in such skeins, particularly when rolled, stamped, or bent out of sheet metalto wit, breaking away of the skein at its junction with the collar or junction of the skein proper with the axle-cap. By my invention breakage at this point is prevented, and I am enabled to use much lighter metal in the skein to support an equal load than is practical with the old mode of constructing the skeins.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, claimed, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the complete skein with a thimble and nut thereon. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through Fig. l with the step removed; Fig. 3, a top view of the collar detached; Fig. 4, a transverse section on line l 4:, Fig. 1 Fig. 5, a bottom view of the step detached.
The skein A is of ordinary construction, having a rear enlargement or cap to fit on the end of the axle, as usual. The collar B, which is shrunk or otherwise tightly fitted on the skein, is much like an ordinary collar with the following exceptions: First, it has an annular extension h, which forms a ring around the base of the skein proper at the junction thereof with a cap, and this ring b supports and strengthens the skein at its weakest point-t1 e., at the bend or shoulder a under the collar, as shown, for this point is known to be the weakest in the skein, and those heretofore made break down first at this point. This annular flangeb effectively prevents this and gives the skein and thimble a much larger and more direct bearing upon the collar. The rear end of the thimble C is cupped out, as at c, to t over the annular flange b, as shown in Fig. 2.
The collar B is provided with two longitudinal parallel anges b on its upper side, as shown in Fig. 4c, the object of which will presently be more apparent.
D represents a step or stool, on the under side of which is a beveled rib cl. This rib is formed with a transverse web cl at one end, by means of which it is suitably strengthened. The step or stool D is placed upon collar B, so that the rib cl will t and rest in the groove or channel formed by the flanges h. The bolster being seated upon the stool D, the several parts are firmly secured by means of clip F, as fully seen in Figs. l and 4.
It will be observed that the stool D forms not only a support for the bolster, but serves as a brace for the collar.
Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
l. The combination of the skein and collar having flanges b', with the step D having rib cl, and the clip F, substantially as described.
2. In awagon-skein, the combination of the skein A, the lcollar B having annular flange h, and parallel flanges b'; with the step D having rib d and web CZ', all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of skein A, collar B, having annular flanges h, and parallel flanges b with step D having rib cl, and clip F, all constructed and arranged" substantially as shown and described.
