C. G. PALTER. COMBINED CARRIAGE-AND GRADLE.
No. 559,445. Patented May 5, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. FALTER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COMBINED CARRIAGE AND CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,445, dated May 5, 1896.
Application filed August 30, 1895- $erial No. 561,046. (No model.)
To and whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. FALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Carriage and Cradle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined childs carriage or buggy and cradle; and it consists in combining features of novelty which make the device simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and efficient in use.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure I is a perspective view of my invention, the buggybody being removed. Fig. II is an end view, and Fig. III a view of a locking-catch.
A represents a platform, which rests either directly on the axles B or has an intermediate block C placed between it and the axle. On the platform A, I place the rockers D, which are rigidly connected together by the rod E, which, near each rocker, passes through a staple F. These staples keep the rod,.from vibrating laterally. ,Any other means may be used for this purpose. To the rocker D, at each side, I connect the C-springs G in any suitable manner. The springs, also, preferably extend from one rocker to the other, as shown. I may, if desired, use any other form of springs. The brace-rods II run diagonally from one rocker to the other, as shown. They may be connected to the rockers in any desired manner. Near the middle of the springs G G, on each side, I form a lug or button K. Below these lugs K, on the platform A, I pivot a locking-catch L. This catch L has cut in it the notch M, which fits under the lug K. In this manner the buggybody is kept from rocking.
N represents the buggy-body.
The operation is as follows, to wit: When it is desired to use the device as a carriage the locking-catches L are turned inward, so that the notch M slips under the lugs K. In this manner the rockers are kept from rocking and no lateral motion or play is present, except that imparted by the flexibility of the springs. If it is desired to use the device as a cradle, the locking-catches L are turned outward until the notches M clear the lugs K. The rockers are then free to work, and the buggy can be rocked to and fro and used as a cradle, too much play or rocking being prevented by the staples F. I may use any other device than the locking-catch as a means of changing the device from a buggy to a cradle.
One of the main features of my invention consists in the use of a platform for the rockers and the simple means for connecting the rockers and regulating their play.
What I claim as new and of my invention is- 1. p The combination in a combined carriage and cradle of the springs connected to the rockers near their ends and extending from one rocker to the other, a connecting-rod extending from one rocker to the other, rockers resting and Working on a platform interposed between the rockers and the axles, as set forth.
2. The combination in a combined carriage and cradle, of springs Gr, rockers D, platform A, rod E, staples F, and a locking-catch, as set forth.
3. The combination in a combined carriage and cradle, of springs Gr, rockers D, platform A, rod E, staples F, braces H, and lockingcatch, as set forth.
CHARLES C. FALTER.
