FLUSHING DEVICE FOR -SEWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,156, dated April 14, 1896. Application filed September 20, 189,5. Serial No. 563,113. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCESCO CAVAL- LARO, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jos, county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Flushing Devices for Sewers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device and apparatus for periodically flushing sewers.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient means for flushing sewers and cleansing them from time to time.
A is a section of a sewer which passes beneath the well B, this well extending up to the surface of the street and having the usual inanholecover.' The section of the sewer which passes beneath this well has an opening at the top, and around the periphery of this opening is formed a flat surface adapted to receive the metal plate C, which is of a length and breadth suiiicient to cover this opening` and which is permanently set into cement to form a protection and prevent the edges of the sewer-pipe from being broken or damaged. In the center of this plate is made an opening of sufficient length and breadth for the admission of brushes or scrapers, if it be desired to use such devices, within the sewerpipe between the adjacent manholes. Around the periphery of this opening is made a groove or channel D, which is adapted to receive any suitable fibrous or packing material to make a joint with the flange E, which projects from the hinged cover F. This cover is fitted to close over the opening in the plate C, and having the flanges E fitting into the channel I) a tight joint is formed at this point to prevent any leakage or escape of gas.
One edge of the cover F is hinged to the plate C, as shown at F', and the other edge has slots or openings formed in it to receive the locking-bolts G, which project upwardly from the plate C, and are so swiveled .as to engage with the cover when it is closed to lock it firmly in place; but they may be easily disengaged, so as to allow the cover to be opened when desired.
In the center of the cover F is a round hole II. This hole is beveled to form a valve-seat, and into this seat fits a correspondinglyshaped conical valve I.
.I J are vertical guide-rods fixed in the cover F, projecting upward upon each side of the hole II, and the valve has slotted arms K projecting upon each side of the top, adapted to slide easily upon the guiderods J, so as to direct the valve in its vertical movements and cause it to open or close with accuracy.
From the top of the valve a stem L extends upward to a point within easy reach near the top of the manhole-opening, and by means of this the valve can be opened or closed at pleasure.
Near one end of the cover F is made a slot, v
which extends transversely with relation to the line of the sewer-pipe, and this slot has diverging guide-wings M, projecting upon each side at the top.
N is a gate which is slidable through the top, and the lower portion is adapted to fit across the interior of the sewer-pipe and to close it, so as to dam that portion of the sewer above the manhole. This valve is operated by a rod O, having a handle in the upper part of the manhole by which it may be operated.
The operation will then be as follows: A suitable water-supply pipe is arranged to deliver water into the manhole, and the valve I and gate N being closed the manhole will be gradually iilled with water to any desired amount. The gate N closing, the sewer also allows water which may be iiowing therein to accumulate in that portion of the pipe above the manhole. When the sewer is to be flushed, the valve I is opened by means of its handle, and the water within the manhole rushing down through the sewer-pipe will flush the lower portion of it.

The valve I may be left open after the flushing has been completed to allow the escape of any gas from the sewer and also for the passage of water from cross-sewers, which sometimes empty into the manhole-well. Any gas arising from the sewer will escape through perforations which are made in the manholecover.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a manhole and a sewer passing beneath and having a communicating opening, of a rim -plate cemented permanently thereon to form a border for the opening, said plate having a central opening and a channel surrounding the opening, a cover hinged upon one side of the plate and swivel locking and fastening bolts adapted to engage the opposite side whereby it is locked and a tight joint formed between the two, a central opening forming a valve-seat having -guide -rods extending upwardly upon each side, a valve adapted to close the opening having slotted guiding-arms slidable upon the guide-rods, a handle-rod extending from the valve upwardly to the upper part of the manhole and a gate slidably mounted in the cover at one side of the center whereby communication with the sewer-pipe may be cut ott or established.
2. The combination with a sewer and a manhole having an open connection with the sewer through the bottom, of a cap-plate perinanently cemented around the opening and itself having a central opening into the sewer, a cover hinged to one side of the cap-plate with swiveled locking-bolts whereby its opposte edge is conned and a projecting flange adapted to engage a corresponding groove or channel to form a joint between the cover and cap-plate, a conical valve-seat formed in the central portion of the cover and vertical guiderods upon each side, a correspondingly-shaped valve having slotted guiding-arms slidable upon the gu ide-rods and an upwardly-extending rod or handle by which it may be opened and closed, a transverse slot made in the coverplate with guiding-wings upon the upper side, and a gate slidable in said slot with an upwardly-extendin g rod and handle whereby the communication with the sewer-pipe may be cut off or established.
