To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN JOSEPH BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Lamps, of Which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to lamps, and particularly to that class thereof used in connec tion with bicycles; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bicycle lamp or lantern provided with my improvement, part of the base of the casing being broken away; and Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the lamp employed, showing also the wick-supporting mechanism.

In this class of devices it is well known that the operation of the bicycle is frequently such as to extinguish the lamp, and this, in many instances, is constantly occurring; and the object of this invention is to provide means to prevent the extinguishing of the lamp, which is caused by the shaking thereof and the consequent movement of the wick within its support.

In my invention I provide the usual lampreservoir A, which may be connected with the lamp in any desired manner and which is readily attachable and detachable whenever desired. The reservoir A is provided with a filling-orifice l3, and arranged in the top and centrally thereof is a central vertical tube 0,

which is provided with an inner tube D, arranged concentrically therewith, and said tubes are united at the bottom, forming an annular chamber E, in which are placed spiral springs F. The wick-holder proper consists The wick-tube L is secured in the top of the tube G, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the wick-adjusting pinion M is provided with a shaft which extends through the tube G, as shown at N, Figs. 1 and 2. As thus constructed, it will be seen that the wick is supported in the tube L, which is secured to the tube G, and that the wick is adjusted by means of a pinion, which is also secured to the tube G or to a shaft mounted in said tube, and any shaking or jarring of the lamp will be transmitted to the tube G and will be taken up by the springs F, as will be readily understood, and the wick and the tube G will move together and the wick will be securely held in the tube L and will not slide therethrough, as it would if said tube were stationary, and the slots H and the pins K are intended to limit the movement of the tube G, as will be readily understood.

My improved lamp or lantern is provided with the usual means for connecting it with the lantern or the means for connecting the reservoir therewith.

It is evident that changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts of my improvement may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope thereof.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters lPatcut- 1. In a bicycle-lamp, the combination of a reservoir, a central vertical tube arranged therein, an inner tube located concentrically within the vertical tube and forming therewith an annular chamber E, a tube G having its lower end arranged to operate in said chamber and supporting the wick-tube L, and the 5 springs F within the chamber and beneath the inner tube, substantially as described.
