Description

(No Model.)
C. HADDEN. SASH HOLDER.
No. 55'7,803. Patented Apr 7, 1896.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CIIARLES IIADDEN, OF MAZON, ILLINOIS.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,803, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed August 29,1895. Serial No, 560,888. (No model.)
To (LZZ 10 7007771 it mcy concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mazon, in the County of Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lYindows and YVindow- Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in windows and windowframes, and more particularly to means for raising and lowering the sash and holding it in any desired position.
It has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction which will permit of easy movement of the window and which will not be aected to any material extent by the changes in the atmosphere, working as well in damp weather as in dry. It embodies guides upon the inner faces of the window-iframe, in which travel rollers which have a bearing against spring-pressed plates seated in vertically-disposed grooves in the outer faces of the sash. The springs press with sufficient force against the strips to hold the sash against movement at any desired point. Means are provided for ready detachment of the sash when necessary.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a frame and sash, showing myinvention, a portion be ing broken away to better disclose other features. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout both views.
Referring now to the details of the drawin gs by letter, A designates a window-frame, upon the inner faces of the side rails of which are the guide-strips B, which form a bearing for the strips C, as well as a track for the rollers D. These strips are arranged in grooves E, formed in the outer faces of the side rails of the sash F, and these plates or strips are urged outward by the springs G,
located in said grooves and bearing against the inner faces of the strips or plates. The rollers may be of any suitable Construction and may be more or less in number, as may be required. They may be inserted in position in any suitable way, and in Fig. 1 I have shown one of the guide rails or strips as provided with openings I, through which the rollers may be passed.
The sash may be retained against displacement in any suitable manner. In Fig. 1 I have shown the blocks K secured to the side bars of the frame and serving to prevent displacement of the sash, and if desired other blocks, L, may be provided near the lower end of the frame, as I have also shown in Fig. 1.
lVith the parts constructed and arranged substantially as above set forth the operation will be apparent. The window is raised and lowered in the usual manner, and the rollers bearing against the strips or plates tends to reduce the friction, rendering the window easily operated, while the springs urging the plates or strips outward against said rollers forms sufficent friction to hold the sash in any of its adjusted positions. The rollers and the springs will be of a size and character depending upon that of the sash in connection with which they are employed.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
hat is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with the window-iframe and its guides, of a sash provided with springpressed strips, and rollers working in said guides and engaged by said strips, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the window-frame and its guide-strips, having openings for the insertion of rollers, of the sash having grooves in its side rails, springs located in said grooves, strips in said grooves bearing against said springs, and rollers between the guides of the frame and against which said strips bear, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES HADDEN.
XVitnesses WM. B. HADDEN, IIRAM ALLIsoN.
