MILTON A. BROWN, OF OLEARFIELD, IOlVA.
PLOW-CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,765, dated April '7, 1896.
Application filed July 15, 1895. Serial No. 555,977. (No model.)
To all whom it 77L[b lj concern.-
Be it known that I, MILTOX A. Bnowiv, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Clearfield, in the county of Taylor and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment for Governing the Depth of a Furrow, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a simple and efficient device for raising and lowering the front end of a plow-beam and the point of the plow while the plow is in motion, and I accomplish the results contemplated by my invention constructed and applied and operated as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a plow and my attachment connected with the plow-beam as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the front end of the beam and that portion of my attachment connected therewith. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of mating plates adapted to be fixed to the parallel sides of the front end of the beam to support an adjustable clevis. Fig. i is a perspective view showing a modification of my invention by means of which the adjustable clevis can be retained in an elevated position when the draft applied to the clevis, by means of horses hitched thereto, is relaxed.
The letter A designates a plow-beam.
B and B are metal plates of uniform size and shape adapted to be clamped fast to the sides and front end of a plow-beam by means of bolts, as shown. Their front and wide portions have straight coinciding slots 0, that serve as inclined planes for abolt D, extended through them and also through the ends of a clevis No. 1, that is thus adjustablyconnected with the plates B and B that practically constitute a frame.
No. 2 is an auxilliary clevis adj ustably con nected with the clevis No. 1 for hitching horses thereto.
II is a roller journaled to the plates B and 13 in rear of the slots C.
J is a lever fulcrumed to the rear portion of the beam A and connected with the bolt D, that carries the clevis No. 1 up and down in the inclined slots C, that serve as bearings for the movable bolt D. Said connection is made by means of a chain K, fixed to the bolt D, and a rod L, that is slidingly connected with the under side of the plow-beam and pivotally connected with the lower end of the lever J.
M is a rack fixed to the plow-beam, andN is a pawl connected with the lever J to engage the rack as required to retain the lever stationary at any angle desired.
In the modification shown in Fig. l the chain K is extended upward from the bolt D and connected with the lever .I, above its fulcrum, by means of a rod L that is slidingly connected with the top of the plow-beam by means of eyebolts or in any suitable way.
In the practical use of my invention the depth of furrow can be readily governed by the lateral adjustment of the clevis No. 2, connected with the clevis N0. 1, and the depth of furrow governed, while the plow is in motion, by means of the lever J within reach of the plowman in rear of the plow. To elevate the clevises Nos. 1 and 2, as required to lower the front end of the plow-beam and to increase the depth of furrow, the top end of the lever J is moved rearward, and to produce a reverse action and a furrow of less depth the lever is moved in a reverse way, as required to draw the bolt D down in the inclined slots 0.
It is obvious that when a forward draft is applied to the clevis No. 2 the bolt D and the clevis No. 1, carrying the clevis No. 2, will rise to the limit allowed by the chain K, as shown in Fig. 1, and descend by force of gravity when the forward draft is relaxed. It is also obvious that the bolt D can be readily elevated and maintained in an elevated position by means of the lever J and rack M when the bolt is connected with the lever at two points by means of chains and sliding rods, as shown in Fig. 4.
I claim as my invention 1. A device for regulating the depth of a plow while in motion, consisting of a frame fixed to the front end of a plow-beam and provided with inclined bearings for a bolt, a bolt extended through said bearings, a clevis connected with the ends of the bolt to be carried thereby, a second clevis connected with the clevis on the bolt, a roller journaled in the frame in rear of the inclined bearings, a lever fulcrumed to the rear end of the beam, a rod pivoted to the lower end of the lever and slidingly connected with the plow-beam, a chain connected with the rod and extended over the roller and fastened to the bolt in the inclined bearings of the frame and means for retaining the lever at various angles relative to the plow-beam, all arranged and combined with a plow to operate in the manner set forth.
2. A device for regulating the depth of a plow while in motion, consisting of a frame fixed to the front end of a plow-beam and provided with inclined bearings for a bolt, abolt extended through said bearings, a clevis connected with the ends of the bolt to be carried thereby, a second clevis, connected with the clevis on the bolt, a roller journaled in the frame in rear of the inclined bearings, a lever MILTON A.
