SMOKE-CONSUMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,093, dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed December 2, 1895. Serial No. 570,848. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. ESTES, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made a certain new and useful Improvement in Smoke-Oonsumers; and I do hereby declare the following to" be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
This device relates to destroying the smoke resulting from the combustion of coal, &c.; and it consists of means for injecting jets of steam into the fire-chamber and incidentally of creating an increased combustion in the fire itself and in means for protecting said apparatus from burning, the details of all of which will be hereinafter fully specified.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the boiler-setting forming the combustion-chamber, showing the invention in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the said setting, further showing same, a fragment of the boiler front being also shown with the invention in place therein. This figure shows also the device for introducing jets of steam below the grate. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the device. Fig at is a horizontal section of the jet to be placed below the grate, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the device shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawings like reference characters are uniformly employed in the designation of corresponding elements of construction.
B is the boiler, 17 the front, G the grate, and A the arch, all of which may be of any construction desired, or may be omitted if the class of boiler will admit thereof, this device being applicable to any combustion-chamber.
In smoke-consuming where there is an arch, as in the boiler shown in the drawings, it is generally preferable that the opening through or over said arch be constricted slightlythat is, be made slightly smaller than is now generally the practice-so that the speed of the passage out of the gases, 850., will not be excessive. This is best accomplished as near the actual point of combustion as possible,
and hence I prefer that the arch-opening be constricted.
1 is a tubular casting, open at both ends and having a radiallyprojecting flange 2 within it, said flange carrying on itsinner or free edge a second tube 3, holes 4 passing from the opening in said tube through the said flange and opening outwardly, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5 of the drawings. One end of this tube 3 is closed by means of a plug 5, as may also be the other end, provided it is not desired to use the hereinafter-described pipe leading to the ash-pit. A lug 6 is cast upon the side of the casing 1 opposite or about opposite the passages 4:, and through said lug is bored a hole, the same being screwthreaded and receiving a pipe 7, which passes through the front plate I), or such other part ofthe boiler-setting as may be desired, so as to introduce the casing l to the combustionchamber and have connection into the cham ber 1 therein from the open air through said pipe 7. A conical plug 8 is so placed as to be movable to and from the exterior opening of the pipe 7, and by means of which the air admitted into the chamber 1 and thence passing into the volume of smoke and flame is adjusted. If it is desired, this pipe 7 may be flared at its outer end and the plug 8 enter to the desired extent the flared portion so formed.
In the construction shown the plug 8 is concentrically perforated and slides longitudinally to the pipe 10, which pipe passes preferably concentrically through the aforesaid pipe 7 and, being connected with the tube 3 at one end and at the other connected to the boiler or to any force of steam-pressure, supplies steam to the device. A set-screw 11. serves to hold this plug in any desired position on the said pipe 10. This device is inserted, as operatively seen in-Fig. 1, so that g the jets will go through into the flame of smoke and gases resultant from combustion, air entering through the pipe 7 into the chamber 1, where it is heated, and thereby cools the casing 1, preventing the intense heat of the fire from burning it off, and passes out at the ends of said casing, where this heated air is thoroughly mixed with the smoke and gases and assists the steam in causing complete combustion thereof. By adjusting the plug 8 just a sufficient amount of air is admitted to keep the casing 1 comparatively cool and at the same time to not interfere with the draft.
As shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, a pipe 12 leads from one end of the tube 3, passing outwardly of the fire box, downwardly and in wardly, terminating in the desired position below the grate G and having a T 13, the ends of which are stopped by plugs 14: and the side of which is perforated by small holes 15, secured on to its end. This pipe 12 should be run so as to be unexposed or covered with suitable material to insulate it against the heat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a smoke-consumer, a casting consisting of a cylindrical jacket, a hollow core proj ecting inwardly into the opening thereof and perforated so as to form jets, said jacketand core being concentrically and respectively perforated with a larger and a smaller opening, an air-pipe entering said jacket and a stean1-pipe passing through said air-pipe into said core.
2. In a smoke-consumer, a casting consisting of a cylindrical jacket, ahollow core proj ecting inwardly into the opening thereof and perforated so as to form jets, said jacket and core being concentrically and respectively perforated with a larger and a smaller opening, an air-pipe entering said jacket and a steam-pipe passing through said air-pipe into said core, and a plate seated and adapted to slide 011 said steam-pipe to and from the annular opening of the said air-pipe.
In a smoke-consumer, a casting consisting of a cylindrical jacket, a hollow core proj ecting inwardly into the opening thereof havin g one or both of its ends closed by remov able plugs for cleaning, and perforated so as to form jets, said jacket and core being concentrically and respectively perforated Wliil'ift larger and a smaller opening, an airpipe entering said jacket and a steam-pipe passing through said air-pipe into said core.
