FIRE-EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,060, dated March 24, 1896. Application filed October 3,1895. Serial No. 564,483. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I ELIAS K. DRIVER, of Lufkin, in the county of Angelina and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fire-extinguishing apparatus more especially designed for use in ginmills, saw-mills, factories, and other buildings, and arranged to enable "the attendant to quickly turn on streams of water or steam to extinguish the flames in or outside of a building.
The invention consists principally of a valved supply-pipe connected with a steamboiler, branch pipes extending vertically from the said supply-pipe within and outside of the building, and discharge-nozzles flexibly connected with the said branch pipes and under the control of the operator for directing the stream in a desired direction.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement as applied and with the building shown in section, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The improved fire-extinguishin g apparatus is provided with a supply-pipe A, connected at one end by a pipe B with the mud-drum of the boiler and by a pipe 0 with the steamdome of said boiler, both pipes being provided with valves B and C, so that when either of the valves is opened water or steam is passed under pressure into or through the pipe A. The supply-pipe A extends under the building .D and is provided with vertically-dis posed branch pipes E and E, of which the branch pipe E extends within the building D, and the other pipe extends outside thereof, as plainly shown in the drawings.
On the branch pipe E within the building are arranged a number of perforated pipes F, each carrying a valve G, so that when the said valves are opened the water or steam passing through the supply-pipe A, 'as previously described, can pass through the perforated pipes F into the building and upon the flames to extinguish the same.
The upper end of the pipe A is provided witlna flexible connection H carrying a nozzle I, and a lever J is connected with the said flexible connection to bend the latter in any desired direction to direct the nozzle, and consequently the stream of Water or steam issuing through the same, to any desired place. A valve G is arranged in theupper end of the pipe E to cut off the supply of steam or water from the nozzle I.
The outer branch pipe I is provided near its bottom with a valve G and on the top with a flexible connection H carrying a nozzle I, similar to-the ones above described in reference to the pipe E. The connection I'I extends horizontally, however, and the nozzle I is supported on a string K attached to a lever L fulcrumed at or near its middle on a rod N secured to the upper end of a post 0. The lever L is provided at its outer end with a downwardly-extending handle P for conveniently manipulating the said lever to swing it up and down or to move it sidewise to direct the nozzle I in any desired direction over the roof of the building D to extinguish any fire there might be 011 the roof. A handle Q is also attached to the nozzle 1, and extends downwardly to enable the operator to swing the nozzle I horizontally, it being understood that by the use of both handles P and Q the operator is enabled to move the nozzle in any desired direction.
If desired, a tank may be interposed in the pipe B and the tank filled with water, so that a sufficient supply of water may be had for extinguishing the flames. It isvunderstood that when the apparatus is in operation the pump for the boiler is set in motion to keep up a steady supply of water or-steam in addition to the water contained in the tank above mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fire-extinguisher, comprising a supplypipe, a branch pipe rising therefrom, a post adjacent to said branch pipe, a flexible pipe ..IOO
communicating with the branch pipe, a nozzle connected with the flexible pipe, a lever fulcrumed at the upper end of the post and connected to actuate the flexible pipe, and two handles respectively connected With the nozzle and with the lever, substantially as described.
2. A fire-extinguisher, comprising a supplypipe having two portions adapted to be respectively connected with parts of a boiler; a branch pipe extending into the building, perforated distributing-pipes communicating with the said branch pipe, a flexible pipe connected with the branch pipe aforesaid, a nozzle for said flexible pipe, a mounted lever actuating the said flexible pipe, a second branch rising from the supply-pipe and outside of the building, a flexible pipe connected to the second branch, a post adjacent to the second branch, a lever mounted on said post and connected to actuate the flexible pipe, and two handles respectively connected with the lever and flexible pipe, substantially as described.
3. A fire-extinguisher,comprising a supplypipe, a branch pipe rising therefrom, a flexible pipe connected with the branch pipe, a nozzle for the flexible pipe, a post rising adjacent to the branch pipe, and a lever supported adjacent to the nozzle by said post, the lever being connected to the nozzle, subsubstantially as described.
