SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,850, dated March 24, 1896. Application led January 18, 1895. Serial No. 635,371. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern.'
Beit known that I, JAMES KIFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Hope, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Valves for Oil-Wells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to an improved oilwell-pumping valve, the object being to provide a packing that may be expanded or contracted in diameter without removing the sucker-rods, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved valve, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with' my invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of the same, partly shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of my improved valve. view of the valve, said section taken on the line :e a: of Fig.
To put my invention into practice I provide a casting 1, cylindrical in form and having projecting portions 3 and recesses 2 at the base, adapted to engage with the top of the standing valve in the bottom of the well and thereby prevent the lower portion of my im proved valve from turning when it is desired to tighten the packing 13. Arranged at the top of this casting l is an annular ring G, which will form a seat for a ball-valve 7. Attached by means of a screw-thread to the casting 1 is an annular ring or cylindrical extension 5, having an integra-l bridge or stop 8 formed therein to limit the movement of the ball-valve 7. A tube 10 is connected to the upper end of the extension 5 and to the lower Fig. at is a sectional plan end of an ordinary valve-cage 12, having slots 4 and ball-valve 7 constructed in a manner well known in the art, said connection between said tube and extension 5 and valvecage 12 being effected by screw-threads, and upon said tube 10 are arranged packingrings I3. In operation this valve is operated in the working barrel of an oil-well by means of sucker-rods, (not shown,) and the packing 13 may be expanded without removing the said valve from the well. To expand the packing 13 the valve is lowered until the slots 2 and projections 3 engage with the stationary valve below, commonly called the standing valve. When this connection has been made the sucker-rods are turned at the top of the well, which will turn the cage 12 and the packingtube 10. This turning of the tube 10 will compress or permit the packing-rings 13 to expand, thereby enlarging the diameter of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the cylindric casting having projecting portions and recesses at the base adapted to engage the top of the standing valve in the bottom of the Well, a ring arranged at the top of said casting, the ballvalve seated in said ring, the cylindric eX- tension screwed upon said casting and having an integral bridge or stop to limit the movement of said ball-valve, the tube connected to the upper end of said cylindric extension and having threaded connections with the parts to which it is attached, substantially as set forth.
