K K are stirrer-arms, each of which is provided with a pair of pins j and an upwardlyprojeeting toe j? These arms are adapted for engagement with the sections of the hub J, as will be hereinafter described, and are provided with beveled teeth 7t". The teeth on the arms K and K, which constitute a pair mounted upon a single hub, break joints that is, they are so arranged that their paths will be staggered that is to say, when the shaft with its stirrer-arms is rotated, the stirrer-arm K following the stirrer-arm K will have its teeth 7c so arranged as to traverse the ridges which were left by the preceding stirrer-arms, so that the material on the trays of the furnace will be very efficiently stirred.
The manner of inserting the stirrer-arms into the hub is as follows: The arm is tilted and its pins j rest upon the lips j, which form a fulcrum for the stirrer-arms. The upwardly-projecting toe of the stirrer-arm is then in proper position to be entered into the recess j of the hub, whereupon the stirrerarm is lowered to a horizontal position and the toe f entered into the recess j of the hub. The stirrer-arm will now be held firmly in position by its own weight. It will be quite obvious that the stirrer-arms will stir or turn over the material placed upon the roasting floors or trays, the shaft carrying the stirrerarms being rotated for this purpose.
Coming nowto the main utility of myinvention, it will be observed that the openings F are so positioned as to allow of the insertion or withdrawal therethrough of the stirrerarms. These stirrer-arms have hitherto been rigidly connected to the shaft, and in order to remove the same it was heretofore necessary to stop the entire operation of the furnace and to allow it to 0001 before the workman could get at the fastenings; but by my invention in order to remove the stirrer-arms it is only necessary to stop the rotation of the shaft and bring the desired stirrer-arm into position in line with the opening, when the stirrer-arm may be removed by simply tilting its outermost end, thereby bringing the toe j out of the recess j and permitting the entire arm to be drawn away from the shaft in a horizontal direction and another arm to be reintroduced and put in place, when the operation may be resumed. This, it will be obvious, is a great saving of time and labor.
It will also be obvious that by my method of building the roasting floors or trays the labor of supporting the floors by arches and the expense of making special supports for the tiles that was heretofore deemed necessary are obviated.
It will likewise be obvious that the details of construction may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a roasting-furnace, the combination with the main shaft having a hub and having said hub provided with upwardly-projecting lips j side wings 3' and with an overhanging flange 7' of stirrer-arms K K having stirrer pins or teeth 70, said stirrer-arms being also provided with the up'wardly-projecting toe and with the laterally-projecting pins f, all arranged so that when the parts are assembled the pins j rest on the lipsj", the toe entering beneath the fiangej, and so that one or more of the teeth 7t on the stirrer-arm are nearer the center of the shaft than the pins j 2. The herein-described roasting apparatus consisting of one or more roasting-floors combined with a vertical main shaft running through the floors, the said shaft having a plurality of hubs, each hub provided with upwardly-projecting lips 7' side wings j and .with an overhanging flange f, of a stirrer-arm entered into each hub, each stirrer-arm having stirrer pins or teeth 7t, said stirrer-arms also provided with an upwardly-projecting toe 7' and with laterally-projecting pins f. all arranged so that when the parts are assembled the pins j will rest on the lips j and the toej will enter between the flange j, so that one or more of the teeth on the stirrer-arms are nearer the center of the shaft than the pins 3' and the stirrer will be in position to stir material placed upon the roasting-floor, substantially as described.
