ALBERT D. FENWIOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TI-IREE-FOURTIIS TO FRIEND WV. JOHNSTON, OF SAME PLACE, AND .IOIIN REEOE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.'
' COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,943, dated March 10, 18961. Application led January l2, 1895. Serial No. 534,605. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. FENWICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars or Analogous Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to collars or analogous articles.
The principal objects of my invention are, iirst, to provide a collar or analogous article consisting of two blanks and a filling or stift'- ener, having exposed edges of the blanks and iilling or stitfener folded inward and the blanks united by stitching passing through and through the folded or lapped edges thereof, and, second, to provide a collar or analogous article made from blanks having the side and end edges turned in or over onto the body and united by stitching, and a complemental turned in or over band united therewith by stitching and the corners or ends reinforced or locked together by the interlapping of the parts of the blanks thereat and secured together by stitching, and to avoid the operations of first running and turning or reversing and pressing the blanks in the production of the collar or analogous article.
Hitherto in the making of collars or the like vit has been customary to unite the blanks constituting the body and band of the collar or the like by stitches along the edge and then to turn the band outward at the bottom and inward at the top and close the same by stitching.
According to my invention the body of the article consists of two blanks and a filling or stiffener, having the exposed lapped edges of the blanks and stiffener of that member united by stitching through the lapped edges thereof, and the band consisting of two blanks and a stiifener having their edges turned in or over onto the body of the same and united at portions by stitching and with the body by like stitching, thereby enabling a collar or analogous article to be cheaply made and with a reduction in the number of operations in the production of the same, for the reason fthe interior of the same. `sectional view on the line x a' of Fig. 2, and
serted and quickly sewed to the body to constitute the article for use.
My invention consists of a collar or analogous article produced in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, scope, and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a plan View of the blanks and stiffeners necessary to form a collar of my invention, the edges of said blanks being' lapped in or turned over and the blanks and stiifeners being shown therein in a form ready to be united by a sewing operation through the lapped in or over edges and sides to produce an article having gutter edges at the end and side edges of the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, on Aan enlarged scale, showing one end of a collar of my invention with parts thereof partially opened outwardly to disclose Fig. 3 is a cross- Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the locked or reinforced points of the collar or analogous article.
In the drawings is illustrated a collar and the method of making the same according to my invention.
With reference now to the drawings, a and tt are blanks of suitable material forming the neekband of the collar; b and h, the bodyblanks, and c and c the internal stiffeners of the body and band of the article, made of cloth, duck, or the like.
The assembled blanks a and ct' in Figs. 2 and 3 have their' horizontal upperand lower edges d and c respectively lapped in or folded down upon the compleinentally folded-in edge of the stiifener c on one side, and on the other onto the inside body of the blanks, forming adjacent to the edges on one side a double thickness, and on the other side provided with the folded edge stiffeners four thicknesses vof the materials, as fully illustrated in Fig. 3. The endsf and g are turned in or lapped down in the same manner, constituting at the upper and lower corners of the neckband on one side six thicknesses of material, considering the filling or stiffener c' as a part thereof, and at the upper and lower corners of the neckband on the other side fou r thicknesses of material, and between the corners on both sides, respectively, two and four thicknesses of material, as will be readily understood from Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The horizontal or upper edges j of the blanks b and h are folded down in a similar manner as the edges d and e of the blanks ct and ed, and the end edges k and l of the blanks b and ZJ are likewise folded in a similar manner as the edges f and g of the blanks a and a', so that there is thus formed six thicknesses of the materials along the top and side edges of the blanks b and b, except at the corners m, where twelve thicknesses are provided of the materials. lt is found preferable, for reasons hereinafter mentioned, to form the corners 71, and t' of the neckbandblanks and corners m of the body-blanks as follows: In one blankfor example, a of the neckband-the side fold, f, extends along the entire end from the upper to the lower edges d and e of the blank a before the same are turned down, and a portion of said fold f is afterward turned down by said folds, while in the other blank, a, the end fold, g, is folded down after the upper and lower folds d and e are formed, thus turning in from the end a portion of said folds cl and e. In the same manner the corners m of the blanks Z) and b are respectively formed by turning down, say, in one blank, b, the end fold 7c, or, as in the other blank, b, by turning in the upper fold, j. The stiff'ener or filling c may be placed on the unfolded blank and its edges folded down when the edges of the respective blanks are folded in or over, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or it may be inserted under the lapped or folded upper edge ,j of either blank b or b and a or a' and permanently secured thereto, when the collar is in a condition for stitching the blanks together to complete the same. The completion of the collar is accomplished in the following manner The body-blanks b and b/ and the stiffener c are united together by stitches n, passing through and through the material at its lapped or folded edges j, 7c and Z, these lapped portions facing each other, as will be readily understood, and the lapped edge Z of the blank b, at its upper end, being tucked under the end of the lapped edge j of the blank l). The blanks a and a are then placed on either side of the body and stiii'ener and united thereto by continuing the stitching n around the band and through its lapped edges d, e, f and g, these lapped edges, of course, facing each other and the endg of the blank a', dovetailing into the groove formed in the other blank between the turned-down edges cl and e.
It may be here 'remarked that ornamentalA stitching may be employed.
My invention is applicable to the manufacture of collars and cuffs of all sizes and shapes, formed first into blanks and then united by stitching and with gutter-edges at the sides, ends and top when united by being sewed together in the manner hereinbefore explained.
By such method of manufacture of the aforesaid article a great saving in material, time and labor is effected, since the article is finished by two operations: first, the turning in or over of the edges of the blanks with the inserted stiffeners beneath the edges of one of the blanks of the body and neckband, and, second, uniting of the blanks of the body and neckband together by a stitching operation on a sewing-machine.
Heretofore the stiffeners and blanks were first sewed together on the reverse side, then turned inside out and flattened or pressed and then sewed on the right side. The old collar had to be finished by hand an d stretched and distorted to bring the blanks together into a proper shape or condition. According to my invention the parts or blanks of the article are at once adjusted to each other when out out and the edges are lapped in or over, whence a union is effected by a sewing or stitching operation, whereby a true collar or similar article is always with accuracy insured.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A collar or analogous article, consisting of two blanks having the corners of one blank of the horizontal folded edge folded onto the end-folded edge thereof and in the other blank the end-folded edge folded onto the horizontal folded edge thereof and the several folded IOO edges dovetailed or interlapped together and secured by stitches passing through the same, substantially as described.
2. A collar or analogous article comprising body-blanks and neckband-blanks having infolded edges laid next each other, with the corners of one blank of the horizontal folded edge folded onto the end-folded edge thereof and in the adjacent blank the end-folded edge folded onto the horizontal folded edge thereof and interlapped; the bottom unfolded edges of the body-blanks being inserted between the top infolded edges of the neckband-blanks, and the whole united together only by stitches which pass from outside to outside of the article and through the infolded edges, substantially as described.
InV testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT D. FENlVlC/K.
