ANTOINE BOURNONVILLE AND JOHN J. ZIMMELE, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO THE TECHNIC ELECTRICAL IVORKS OF NEIV JERSEY.
BOND 0R CONNECTOR FOR ELECTRIC RAILWAYS OR OTHER ELECTRIC CONDUCTORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,846, dated March 3, 1896.
Application filed September 20,1895. Serial No. 563,124. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ANTOINE BOURNON- VILLE and J OHN J. ZIMMELE, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bonds or Connectors for Electric Railways or other Electric Conductors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to an improvement in bonds or connectors for electric railway or other electric conductors, and has for its object the bonding or connection of such conductors, making continuous electric conductors and absolute and perfectly tight con,- tacts.
The invention consists of a bar or piece of copper, half-round or segmental in cross-section, bent up and reversed on itself at each end, making a split and cylindrical or nearly cylindrical head approximately the dimension of the opening in the rail or conductor.
It also consists of a wedging device driven in between the main stem of the bond or connector and the upturned end until said de vice has extended far enough into or through the opening in the rail or conductor to spread apart the sections of the head, so as to make close contact and a tight joint.
The wedges or wedging devices employed may be made of different materials and proportions, depending on the condition under which they are employed.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a bond embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section thereof on line x (15, Fig. l, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section of the head of a bond, the wedging device, and the portion of the adjacent stem or body of the bond embodying our invention. Figs. 4 and 5 represent horizontal sections of other forms of the invention. Fig. 6 represents an elevation at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 5.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a bond, which is formed of a bar of copper rolled,
drawn or otherwise manufactured, half-round or segmental in cross-section, the ends being bent or reversed on themselves, thus producing divided terminals or heads B approximately cylindrical, the same being inserted into or through openings or holes in the rails or conductors to be bonded, and then spread apart against the walls of said openings in the rails or conductors by means of the wedges C, which are driven between the divisions of said heads, thus forming tight joints between the heads and the rails or conductors.
In Fig. 4 we show part of a bond or connector formed of a piece of round wire or metal with the end rolled or formed half-round or segmental and doubled upon itself, producinga head, between the divisions of which the wedging device F is driven.
In Figs. 5 and 6 we show part of a bond or conductor formed of a piece of half-round wire or metal, the part G Where the wire or bar is reversed on itself or bent being reduced, producing a head, between the divisions of which the wedging device II is driven.
I11 Figs. 4 and 5 the wedge after being driven into position is upset, by which provision absolute contact is insured.
In Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 the end of the upturned portion of the head is formed with the lip J, which serves to prevent any outward displacement of the wedge.
It will be seen that owing to the reduced part G of the head of the bond, the metal of the head bends to better advantage and may be more easily inserted in the conductor.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is
1. Abond or connector for an electrical conductor formed of a bar having a body halfround or segmental in cross-section and an end reversed on itself forming a divided head which is adapted to be spread apart, substantially as described.
2. A bond or connector for an electrical conductor having the end of the metal of which the bond is formed reversed upon itself, producing a divided head, Which is adapted to 4. The bond With the reduced portion at the be spread apart by a suitable Wedging device, bend of the head thereof, substantially as de- 10 substantially as described. scribed.
3. A bond half-round in cross-section, hav- ANTOINE BOURNONVILLE. ing an end portion reversed on itself, produc- JOHN J. ZIMMELE. ing a divided head, and a Wedge adapted to \Vitnesses: spread apart the sections of said head, sub- JOHN A. VVIEDERSHEIM,
stantially as described. R. H. GRAEsE.
