STRAINER FOR PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,831, dated March 3, 1896 Application filecl September 30,1895. Serial No. 564,146. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. Srnvnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers for Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to strainers for pumps, and more particularly to that class of strain ers adapted to be attached to the lower end of the pump-pipe and prevent insects and foreign matter from entering it at that end.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and to produce a device of this character, which may be readily attached to and removed from the pump.
IVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lower end of the pumptube, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the strainer removed and its parts separated.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the lower end of the pump-tube, in which is placed a short sleeve 2 having a closely-woven wire-netting 3 secured therein near its upper end. The lower end of the sleeve is bent outward to form a flange 4, which engages the extreme lower end of the pipe and serves to prevent the sleeve being drawn upward by the suction of the pump.
5 denotes a coarse strainer, which consists of a perforated piece of sheet metal 6, which rests against the lower end of the pipe and is held thereto by a ring 7, having arms 8, which project upward along the side of the pipe, and provided with elongated apertures 9. A bolt 10 is inserted through the pipe and through these apertures, and a washer 11 is placed on the upper face of the ring and is clamped against the perforated plate, so that portions thereof willenter the perforations of said plate along its edge and serve to prevent the plate from slipping out of place. The ring has also short lugs 12, which serve to prevent it from twisting or canting to one side. By this construction when the washer becomes compressed the nut on the bolt may be loosened and the ring tightly shoved up against the washer and held thereagainst by tightening the nut.
A strainer thus constructed is very simple and will effectively prevent the entrance of insects and all foreign matter into the pipe at the end to which it is secured.
Although I have described this invention as being applied to pump pipes or tubes, I would have it distinctly understood that I contemplate its employment with any pipe or tube wherein it is desired to separate the foreign matter from the water, and therefore do not wish to be limited to its application to a pump.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a pipe, of a sleeve having at its upper end a finely-woven screen and at its lower end a laterally-extending flange to abut against the lower end of said pipe when the sleeve is inserted therein, a coarse screen resting against the lower end of the pipe, a washer interposed between the lower face of the flange and the screen, a ring supporting said coarse screen and provided with arms which project up along the side of the pipe and are formed with elongated apertures, and a bolt passing through said arms and said pipe for adj ustably clamping the ring to the coarse screen, substantially as set forth.
