Description

i (Nomodex.)
J.D. JOHNSTON. KNIFE GLEANER AND SHARPBNER.
No. 555,819. Patented Ma.r.3,1896.
llnirnn STATES .IOIIN D. JOHNSTON, OF NEVPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
KNIFE CLEANER AND SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,819, dated March 3, 1896i.
Application iiled September 20, 1895. Serial No. 563,115. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Beit known that I, JOHN D. JOHNSTON, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Knife Cleaner and Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nat-ure of a combined knife-Sharpener and cleaning device, and it has primarily for its object to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive construction which can be manufactured at a small cost and which will effectively serve for its intended purposes.
My invention also has for its object to provide a sharpener and cleaner device which can be conveniently held upon a table and grasped with one hand as the knife is drawn through the same, and which has the emery and grinding portions so held that they will positively engage and bear against the knifeblade irrespective of the thickness thereof and the manner in which it is drawn between the said grinding portions.
Vitll other minor objects in view which hereinafter will appear, the invention consists in a device of the character stated, comprising the novel fea-tures of construction of parts first described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the preferred form of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 23 is a longitudinal section of the device, showing one of the clamp-faces made adjustable. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the device. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the emery or grinding portions and the yielding back or bearing members, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the emery strip bent up ready to be inserted in the slotway of the block.
In its practical construction my invention is made of a body portion A, of wood or other material, formed with an extension or handle portion A' and an upwardly-extending bed or scouring end A2, which extends up sumeient to allow for a transverse slotway or recess O for the passage of the knife-blade I3.
In the preferred form the body A is made of a solid block, but I desire it understood that when the same is to be used for scouring large-size blades, one of the jaws forming the slotway or knife-passage may be made adjustalole, as shown in Fig. 3.
The slotway O is made slightly tapering, being smallest at the bottom, and the side walls thereof have yielding bearing members D D, made preferably of rubber.
E indicates the emery strip which in practice is doubled or bent upon itself, as shown in Fig. G, before it is inserted in between the yielding members D D, such strip being preferably of such width that the ends e e will project slightlyabove the block, as shown, whereby to facilitate the ready removal thereof after it is worn out.
To prevent the emery-paper and the yielding members from being pulled out endwise as the blade is reeiproeated in the slotway, the walls of such slotway are depressed, as at d2, and terminate at projecting edges a a, which extend over the ends of the emery strip and the yielding members D D, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the advantages of my improvement will be readily understood.
It will be observed that by grasping the device with the left hand and holding it down against the table the same will remain steady as the knife-blade is reciprocated through the slotway.
It will be also manifest that the yielding members D will at all times hold the emery strips up tightly against the blade of 'the knife, thereby thoroughly scouring and sharpening the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A knife Sharpener and cleaner comprising a body portion and an adjustable detachable member, the opposing faces of said body and meinber being so shaped as to provide a slotway and a strip of abrasive material held between said parts and in the slotway substantiaily as shown and described.
5 2. A knifesharpener comprising a body portion slotted transversely, the opposing faces of said slot having recesses or pockets, the cushion and the strips of abrasive material held Within the slots and coniined in the pocket, the upper edges of the abrasive 1o material projecting above the slot or recesses substantially as shown and described.
JOHN D. JOHNSTON. Vit-nesses:
W. O. MILNE, DARIUs BAKER.
