SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,67 9, dated March 3, 1896.

T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FITZ E. GULvER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnace-Grates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to furnace-grates, and especially to that class in which rolling or rocking bars are used.
The objects of this invention are to increase the effective grate-area and to protect the frame for supporting the grate by transforming it into a combustion-surface by covering it with removable clips between which the air may freely circulate.
In rocking furnace-grates now in use bars are provided with detachable clips, which maybe replaced by new ones when too much affected by the fire, so that a single clip may often be sufficient, where otherwise an entire bar would be required. The frames supporting the fire-bars involve a much greater expense when to be replaced than single firebars. Still they are more directly exposed to the burning fuel, which accumulates upon their surfaces. For this reason my invention consists in providing the frames supporting the fire-bars with detachable clips like those mounted upon the fire-bars proper, so that the clips upon the surfaces of the supporting-frames and those upon the fire-bars combined form a removable fire-bed; and the same consists also in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter will be more fully described.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top view of a grate embodying my invention, so much of the parts being represented as necessary for understanding the arrangement of parts both of a single and a double grate. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section at the line 00 a: in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a top view of two side or supporting frames. Fig. 4. is an elevation of a single side or supporting frame. Fig. 5 is a detail in sectionat the line 1 1 in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail in section at the line 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detail in section at the line 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. Sis a detail like Fig. 7, with one clip in position to be placed upon one of the side or supporting frames, so as to lock the other one. Figs. 9 and 10 are views of a clip. A A denote the walls of the furnace, receiving the framework 13 of the grate. This framework B for a single grate consists of two supporting-frames C C, the ends of which are connected by means of the bars D D, screwed to lugs extending out from the ends of the frames C and resting upon the castings E and E.
The upper surfaces of the supportingframes C C are provided at equal distances with projections a a a for receiving the clips F. Said projections a a extend a little inside the grate, which extending portion is feathered and provided with shoulders 1, so that the clips, being furnished with corresponding openings, can be slipped upon the same from the other end and firmly held in place by clips put upon the projections a a from above, thus locking the clips put on sidewise against the shoulders 1 with which the projections a a are provided.
As will be readily understood by Figs. 1 and 7, the clips used upon the supporting-frames C C in a single furnace-grate are held in place by the shoulders 1 and the Walls A of the furnace, and have the lower part embracing the projections 64 a extending out only on one side toward the furnace-wall, so as to come closely in contact with the same so an airspace 6 is formed between the wall and the grate.
In forming a double furnace-grate two single frameworks B are arranged side by side within the walls of the furnace, as indicated by the rear part of the top View shown in Fig. 1. Thus two of the supporting-frames C C will meet in the middle of the furnace.
Fig. 3 of the drawings shows this position of the frames C C. They are of the same con struction as those arranged along the walls of the furnace, and are provided with clips, one of which is mounted upon each one of the two frames C, put upon sidewise against the shoulders 1 and locked by a third clip F, which is put upon both of the projections a o of the frames from above, and thus joining the frames 0, all of which will be readily understood by Figs. 3 and 6.
The clips F differ from the clips F. Imake the clips 1* so as to have one side with a smooth plane surface, and the lower part of the clips extend only to one side. The clips F have their lower parts extended to both sides and their upward portions with divergent sides, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. c c c are bearings in the supporting-frames C. They are in the upper strengthened part of the said frames and receive the T-levers G. In the drawings three of these T-levers are shown on each side of the frames C; but I do not limit myself to any number of the same.
II II are cross-bars provided with a series of detachable clips, and journaled in the horizontal arms of the T-levers G G.
I I are slotted arms extending downward from the cross-bars II II, being rigidly attached thereto, and are united by a zigzagformed bar K, having pins to slide in said slotted arms I I.
L L are swinging arms extending downward from a cross-bar M, journaled in the frames C and pivoted to the end of the bars N N, said bars N N being pivoted to the extremities of the vertical arms of the T-lcvers G G.
O is a rod pivoted to the zigzag-formed bar K and extending out to the front of the furnace, where it is connected with one of the levers P, which is operated by a hand-lever R. Q is another rod, being pivoted to one of the bars N N and extending out to the front of the furnace to be connected with the other lever, P.
S is a casting secured to the front of the furnace and having pivoted to it the levers P.
The specific construction of the movable portion of the grate forms no part of the pres ent invention and may be varied at pleasure. The clips mounted upon the frame maybe varied in form, and in practice usually take substantially the shape of the clips applied to the rocking bars, so as to provide a uniform grate-surface.
\Vith the exception that the clips mounted upon the frame cannot be agitated, that portion of the grate is equally serviceable as a comb ustion-surface with the movable portion, as it presents an open surface upon which the fuel may rest and through which the air may freely circulate to promote combustion.
The protection of the frames is secured not only by the use of the covering, but by the circulation of air about them, so that from the advantage of an increased grate-area accrues the added advantage of greater safety to the frames.
hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a furnace-grate having rolling or rockin g bars a grate-frame, the side bars or frames of which have projections partly feathered and shouldered toward the inside of the respective framework-and clips or leaves slipped upon said feathered part against the shoulders, and other clips or leaves, coming in contact with the side wall of the furnace and put upon said projections from above, thus locking the clips slipped upon, as set forth.
2. In a furnace-grate having rolling or rocking bars and consisting of two or more sections of grate-frames the meeting side bars of which being provided with projections partly feathered and shouldered toward the inside of the relative framework: and clips or leaves slipped upon each said feathered part against the respective shoulders, said clips being locked and held firmly in place by clips or leaves put upon said projections from above and uniting or combining the meeting side bars, as set forth.
The combination with a furnace-grate having rolling or rocking bars, of a frame for supporting such bars and fuel-supporting clips independent of the bars and mounted upon and covering the side members of such frame and spaced apart to permit the circulation of air, whereby the combustion-surface of the grate is extended over its side frames, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
