BOILER-PUMP REGULATOR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,555,540, dated Mai-eh 3, 1896. Application iilfiil June 15, 1895. Serial No. 552,940. No model.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itlmown that I, CHARLES AUGUSTUS STRALB, a citizen of the United States, residing atRouseville, in the county of Venango,
and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Boiler-Pump Regulator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in feed-regulating devices for steam-boilers, and has foritsobject to provide a-feed-regulator of simple, inexpensive, and efficientconstruction, which will operate automatically to throw the injector-pump into and out of operation for the purpose of maintaining the water at the desired level in the boiler.
A further object of the invention is to provide,in connection with such regulator, means whereby the water may be maintained at different levels in the boiler and the steampressure varied to suit the conditions required.
In order to accomplish the objects above I mentioned, the invention consists in an improved mechanism for automaticallyrregulating the feed of water to steam-boilers, embodying certain novel fealures and details of construction and arrangement of parts, whereby advantages in point :of simplicity and efiicienoy are attained, ashereinafter fully described, illustrated" in the drawings, and finally embodied in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view in elevation of the improved boilerfeed regulator, showing the relation thereof to the injector-pump and the steam and water pipes, valves, &c. Fig. is a vertical sectional view through the improved regulator and the steam-cut-olf valve through which the steam is admitted to the pump.
Similar numerals of reference designate cor-' responding parts in both figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the regulator contemplated in this invention "comprises an upper disk, 1, and a lower disk or head, 2. These disks or heads are formed with circular recesses in their adjacent faces, as shown, and each has bolted thereto a ring or annular plate 3 of the same diameter and secured to its inner face. Arranged between each diskor head and .its ring or annular plate 3 is acircular diaphragm 4, of any suit-- able flexible materiaL and which will hereinafter be designated as the upper and lower diaphragms. The upper and lower heads of the regulator thus far described, to-
gether with. the rings and diaphragms, are spaced a convenient distance apart, and so held by means of tie bolts or rods 5. j
. 6 designates a metal b1-acket,the upper portion of which fits between the rings 3 of the upper'and lower regulator-heads, the latter being bolted or otherwise secured to said bracket which forms the support for the regulator. This bracket is itself supported by means ofa depending portion or arm 7,
. which extends downwardly to, rests upon, and
is suitably connected with the case of the steam-cutoffvalve 8. j y p 9 designates a lever, which is pivotally con-' nected with or fulcrumed within an opening in the bracket 6 upon a stationary pin 10.
11 represents a pressure-head, the middle portion of 'which is slotted or apertured to.
permit the passage of the lever 9, the same being connected by a pivot 12. The upper and lower ends of this pressure-head are ex panded in diameter, as shown, and are adapted, when properly adjusted, to rest in contact with the inner adjacent faces of the upper and lower diaphragms 4. The lever 9 is connected at one end" by means of a ball-andsocket joint, or in any convenient manner, with the upper end of the stem 13 of the steam-cut-oif valve 8, above referred to, while the opposite end of said lever is provided with a ball or weight 14, which is capable of being moved lengthwise of that end of thelever, for a purpose that will be hereinafter set forth.
14 design ates the steam-supply pipe, which connects at one end with the steam-space of the boiler and at its opposite end with the steam-chest of the injector-pump, the steam-.
The pipe 17 may have two or more branches 18, leading todiflferent boilers'where a gang is employed, and is connected with the lower head of the regulator by means of a small branch pipe 19, which communicates with the pressure will be exerted against the upper dia- LII phragm, while the pressure against the lower" diaphragn-i is variable and changes according \Vhen the water is at a 'n-edetermined' level in the boiler, the steam and water pressures coun" to the depth of water in the boiler.
terlmlance each other with relation to the regulator and thus hold. the steam valve closed. \Vhen, however, the head or level of the water in the boiler falls, the reduction in the weight of water effects a corresponding decrease in the pressure against the lower-diaphragm, and the excess of steam-pressure causes the regulator-head to descend sut'ficiently to open the steam-valve and admit steam to the pump-engine. The pump is thus thrown into action and continues to work until the proper water-level is again attained in the boiler, whereupon said water will press against the lower diaphragm with a force sufficient to counterbalance the steam-pressure on the upper diaphragm, thus closing the steam-valve and checking the pump. moving the weight it in or out upon the lever 9 the amount 01' water fed to the boiler may be regulated as desired.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. A feed-regulator for steam-boilers, comprising two flexible diaphra-g'ms arranged in such manner as to be acted upon, one by steam-pressure and the other by water-pressure, and a lever interposed between said diaphragms and adapted to be influenced thereby for operating the steam-cut-oli valve, for throwing the injector-pump into and out of operation, in the manner substantially as described.
2. A feed-regulating device for steam-boilers, comprising two diaphragms mounted within a suitable frame or case and spaced a suitable distance apart, a lever interposed between said diaphragms and mounted pivotaliy within said frame, and a pressure-head hinged to said lever and interposed between and having its ends in close proximity to said diaphragms, all arranged for joint operation, substantially as described.
3. A device for regulating the feed of :gteam boilers, com prising two diaphragms spaced a suitable distance apart, the regulator-heads or frame-plates in which said diaphragms are mounted, the tie-boltsinterposed between and connecting said heads,a valve-operating lever interposed between said diaphragms and headsyand apressure-head having a pivotal relation to said lever and resting with its opposite ends against or in close proximity to said diaphragm, substantially as specified.
4. A feed-regulating device for steam-boil ers, comprising two flexible diaphragms, the regulator-heads in which said diaphragms are mounted constructed to afford steam and water spaees upon the oute'r opposite facesof said'diaphragms and provided with openings for the introduction of steam and water pipes, apressure-head disposed between said diaphragms'aiul adapted to be operated thereby, and a stcam-valve-operating lever mounted upon a stationary pivot and pivotally connected to saidpressu re-head, said lever being also provided with a movable coiuiterbalanceweight, all arranged for joint operation, substantially as specified.
5. -A feed-regulating device for steam-boilers', comprising two diaphragms, the regulator-heads in which said diaphragms are sus-' pended, tie bolts or rods connecting said heads, a bracket having a portion thereof interposed between and. bolted or otherwise socured to said heads for supporting the latter, and-provided with an arm or support adapted to be connected with the steam-valve or other convenient point of support, a valve-operating lever hinged to said bracket, and a pressure-head disposed between the diaphragms and pivotally connected with said lever, substantialiy as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a feed-regulating device for steamboilers, the combination with the in jectorpump, the steam-supply pipe leading thereto and the water-pipes leading therefrom to the boiler, of a regulator interposed between said steam and water pipes, said regulator comprising two diaphragms mounted within suitable heads constructed in such manner as to leave steam and .water spaces adjacent to said diaphragm, a steam-pipe branch interposed between the steam-supply pipe and one of the regulator-heads, a water branch pipe inter posed between the water-pipe proper and the opposite regulator-head, and a lever interlposed between said diaphragms and capable of being influenced thereby, said lever being operatively connected with the steam-valve which regulates the flow of steam to the injector-pump, substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
