WTTNESSES:
ATTORNEYS.
UNITEn STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEF DENK, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
COFFEE-MAKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,500, dated March 3, 1896.
A li ti fil d June 1, 1895. Serial No. 551,417. (No model.) Patented in Austria April 23, 1894,1lo.62,'768,andi11 Hungary April 23, 1894, No. 95,372.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEF DENK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffee-Making Machines, (patented in Austria, No. 62,768, and in Hungary, No. 95,372,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the-invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked Ehereon, which form a part of this specifica- The object of my invention is to provide a coffee-making machine of simple,-strong and durable construction, easily handled and reliable in operation.
The invention consists in the improved coifee-making machine, in a certain flexible locking mechanism and in the combination and arrangements of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a central section through my improved device; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail view of a certain coffee-receptacle, and Fig. 3 an enlarged top plan view of a certain seat for the said coffee-receptacle hereinafter more fully described.
In said drawings, A represents a pot, with lid B provided with an air-hole B. Said pot is removably suspended in a yoke or frame 0 secured to base D. In a central recess of said base is arranged the heating device E with handle F, all as in ordinary coffee-making machines.
The pot A is divided by the horizontallyarranged partition-plate 1) into an upper and lower receptacle a and c, (the upper one being provided near its bottom with an outlet-cock Ct',) but which are in communication with each other by means hereinafter described. The partition I) is provided with a centrally-arranged and upwardly-extending cylinder or cone 1), provided at its top with a flange 6 having a series of two or more recesses b as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The flange b of said central cylinder or cone forms the seat for the coffee-receptacle d, provided at its under side with an annular shoulder (1 adapted to fit into the top of said cylinder or cone 1). To the side or to the under side of the coffee-receptacle d are secured in any desired manner a series of substantially rectangular springs adapted to pass with their horizontally-arranged portion through the recesses b of the flange b and after being turned with the receptacle 61 out of alignment with said recesses, to bear against the under side of said flange and thus prevent the entire withdrawal of the receptacle d from the cylinder or cone Z).
In the center of the bottom of the receptacle cl is secured a tube f extending downward to about the bottom of the lower receptacle 0, and is provided with a series of perforations f opening into the receptacle d.
The upper portion of the tube f terminates into a conical-shaped stem adapted to receive the neck of the hooded sieve h, covering the openings f in tube f and also a portion of the bottom of the said receptacle. The top portion of the stem is threaded, as at g, and adapted to receive a nut m, secured in the center of the lid 2', which latter is provided with a series of small preforations and fits closely on the receptacle cl.
A strainer 70, made of flannel, lint or any other suitable material, is placed between the lid e' and the receptacle d, as shown in Fig. 1.
In operation the lower receptacle is filled with water, ground coffee placed into the receptacle d,the strainer 71; and the perforated lid placed in position. The receptacle d is then placed on its seat-that is, on the flange b of cone band is then turned to one side until the rectangular springs e engage the under side of said flange. The pot A is then covered by the lid B and the heating device E started. The water will soon begin to boil and by the pressure of the generated steam will be forced through the tube f and its openings f (and also sieve h) into the receptacle d,where it is thoroughly mixed and infused with the ground coffee, which infusion is forced by the water following through the strainer k and perforated lid into the upper receptacle, a, of the pot, from where it can be discharged through cock a" into glasses, cups, the.
The above-described coi'tee-making machine has, on account of its llexible springlocking mechanism, a great advantage over all other coffee-making machines, as an explosion or bursting of the pot is impossible. Should the pressure in the pot get too great, the receptacle (1 is lifted 011 its seat by said excessive pressure snflieientlyfar to allow the surplus of steam to escape, and is then. by the action of the angular springs returned to its normal position.
llaving thus d scribed my iuventioii, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a collTec-making machine, a pot, a partition dividing said pot into an upper and lower receptacle, a central cone or cylinder rising from said partition and provided at its top with an annular flange having a series of recesses, a coffee-receptacle provided at its under side with an annular shoulder to tit on and into the top of said cone, a series of angular springs depending from said receptacle and adapted to bear with their horizontallyarranged portions on the under side of said annular flange and thus to form a flexible locking mechanism, said annular flange, a tube in the bottom of the coffee-receptacle, and extending downward into the lower receptacle of the pot and provided with a series of perforations opening into the said coffeereceptacle, a strainer on said receptacle and a perforated lid on said strainer, all said parts substantially its and for the nn-poses described.
2. In a eollfec-n'ialcing machine, a pot, a partition dividing said pot into an upper and lower receptacle, a central cone or cylinder rising from said partition and provided at its top with an annular flange having a series of recesses, a coffee-receptacle provided at its underside with an annular shoulder adapted to lit into the top of said cone, a tube in the bottom of the coilfce-receptacle and extending downward into the lower receptacle of the pot and. provided with a series of perforations opening into said. coilee-rece 'ltacle, a cone-shaped stem at the upper end of said tube, a perforated hooded sieve provided with. acrmieal-slnqied neck arranged on said stem and covering the perforations in the tube and a portion of the bottom of. the receptacle, a strainer on said rcee niacle, a lid on said strainer, and a series of rectangular springs depemling from the receptacle and :nlapted to engage with their liorizontally-bent portions the under side of the flange of the cen tral cone and thus to term a flexible locking 1noehanisn1,all said parts, sul )stantiallyz s and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the torcgoingl have hereunto set my hand this (5th day of May, 1895.
